Help with feeding schedule

I have fed LO on demand since birth. Initially we fell into a predictable schedule that lasted quite a while. But somewhere along the way it fell to pieces. I think it had to do with his naps, around the time the 45 minute intruder invaded. Now he eats anywhere from every 1 to 2 hours. Sometimes I feed him, we play and about 30 minutes later I nurse him to nap. Sometimes he comfort sucks and sometimes he eats when I nurse to nap. He takes a paci but not when it's time to nurse for naps, refuses and screams. He has become a snacker throughout the day and I don't know how to get it more regular. I don't go out much because of this. I'm not comfortable to NIP and really it's not that convenient when shopping and running errands, or so I imagine it wouldn't be. I like nursing on demand but would like some predictability. Also, he when i work he snacks on his bottles too. 1-3 oz at a time. Any tips appreciated.

Re: Help with feeding schedule

  • Is he growing right now? Learning something new? rolling? scooting? babbling? These are all good reasons for more frequent nursing. I found my daughter didn't nurse as often when we were out because she was distracted and I would be somewhere I felt comfortable nursing her when the time came.

I don't think you can make a baby eat more my daughter didn't drink more than 4oz until she was about 18 months and now only drinks maybe 6oz and she is almost 2.5... some people are light eaters, it may not be convenient for us I always make sure now I have snacks handy for my daughter because she likes to eat smaller meals through the day rather than big filling meals a few times a day, but I have heard this is a benefit of keeping people at a healthy weight...

  • Are you commited to nursing your LO to sleep?  It seems to me that this might be a contributing part of your baby's routine.  If he commonly associates nursing with going to sleep, he may be drowsy every time you nurse.  And if he's drowsy, he won't necessarily take in a good sufficient feeding, meaning he'll be hungry earlier.  Additionally, around 4 months is when they become more aware of everything, and everything is so interesting!  Haha.  So even their good feedings get cut short if they see something shiny, etc.
