They are throwing around a lot of local places, but I have to LOL at them refering to the area they are in as Upstate. I have never heard of anyone who lives in Syracuse refer to Syracuse as upstate. Usually when we say upstate, we mean north Watertown.
Re: Anyone watching Upst@te?
I recorded it to watch this weekend although my friends on FB have said it's pretty awful. I was hoping it would be picked up, they do some scenes at the bar that sponsors my slow-pitch softball team!
As far as "upstate" is concerned, I never heard anyone refer to the Syracuse area as upstate until I went to college and the people from LI/NYC/Westchester area called me and upstater. Apparently, anything north of Westchester is "upstate." Personally, I think I live in Central NY. Then there's the Capital region, the ADKs, the Finger Lakes region, Western NY, and Upstate would be north of Watertown. But what do I know!
Wikipedia has an interesting take on what upstate ny is. It is my experience that Upstate isn't really a region, rather it is a term used to identify a region of the state that is north of where you are.
The show was pretty bad. It didn't look good, but it was a pilot shot on location. I was expecting a comedy, maybe it was supposed to be but there was nothing funny. It also made Syracuse seem more like a small, run down town than a city. Of course, not that Syracuse especially within the city is a booming urban meca, but it made Syracuse look really bad. Embaressingly bad.
They are also going to be filming an independant film with Emma Roberts here called Adult World about an SU student who can't find work any place besides an adult bookstore. Of course Adult World is more than just a book store, I once worked with a girl who was a dancer there.
People are all excited about the show and the movie. I can't see how these portrayals of Syracuse would help much around here though.
Never heard of the show - is it a local thing or was it on national TV?
Around here, we're considered upstate, because we're north of NYC. Syracuse and points west are considered Central and Western NY. DH is from Watertown, and they refer to their area as the North Country.
Of course, when I went to college in NYC, everyone there thought that I lived on a farm because I lived north of Westchester county.
DH and I watched... also hoping it would be funny. It wasnt.
They name dropped a lot of places, which I thought was self serving and didnt have a reason to name drop all those places. The plot was confusing at best, and dreadful at worse. It was so depressing - not funny. It made Syracuse seem like the worst place in the work.
And lots of making out.
Growing up in CT, everything north of NYC was considered "upstate" .... so when people ask where I live, I say "Upstate NY, in Syracuse"
