Cloth Diapering

Sooo tired of the stink!!

In my last post it was suggested my load was too small.  So I waited 3 days before washing and threw in a large towel in hopes of making the load size larger and therefore more water.  I decided to keep using 1.5 scoops of detergent.  I noticed during a rinse cycle there were loads of suds so I went ahead and did a million rinses until I saw no more left.  By this point it was running late and I needed something for DS for overnight so I threw them in the dryer.  My fitteds came out smelling still.  So DS is in a sposie so I can figure this crap out.

We have well water, which is a little hard.  Perhaps it's harder than I thought and I need to use a softener?  I don't have dry skin or anything.  I also have a packet of RLR that I can strip with but I'm worried about how to avoid continuing having this problem!!

  • How many diapers are you putting in the wash?  I normally only put 12 or less.  Also have you tried using a little bleach?  That might help a little.  What soap do you use?  I have super hard water and use Rockin' Green for hard water and it works wonders.

If I do 2 days then it's 3-4 prefolds with liners, 2-3 covers, 2 microfiber fitteds and 2 hemp inserts. I use bumGenius and started having stink problems when I tried Rock N Green, but these are new prefolds that RNG never touched. I didn't strip the fitteds, they were used.

  • I would keep up with the larger load, and start using a water softener.  Without it, the detergent can't work right and may not rinse out well.

I feel bad for you.  Every  time you post I keep hoping you'll have your final solution.

I've never had them come out of the dryer stinky.  I always thought I had build up problems, but I swear there were no bubbles left so I dont' understand.  Makes me think it must be the water then.  I must be getting closer to the answer, just tired of the stink in between.  Since they came out stinky I didn't want to put them on DS.  I'm grateful for everyone's help.

With hard water the detergent uses all of its cleaning power softening the water and then there isn't enough left to clean the diapers.  Using more detergent leads to build up/ammonia issues which confuses the problem.  I'd buy some Calgon water softener and try that.

I hope you get it figured out soon!
