At what weight did you actually transfer your twins from infant seats?

I know it depends on height as well.  I didn't have an infant seat for my eldest, and my younger son had a 20# limit (things have changed since!)  I have a friend offering me her 22 limit seat and I'd need to get another one.  However, I'm wondering if I should just stick with getting to Graco 30s, which is what I was going to do initially.  Carrying around 60 pounds of baby plus 30 pounds of carseats doesn't sound terribly reasonable, though.

  • It's really never the weight that they hit first, it's always the length... I transfered my kiddos at 9 and 10 months.  Both of them were small and short for their age.

Ahem, unless you are like me and have short chunky babies. Wink  I also had a 22lb weight limit car seat and I switched my boys to convertibles around 9 months old when they were 21 lbs.  Even though it was a pain to switch them, they had gotten so heavy that it was really hard to carry them in their seats so I don't know if I could have kept them in infant seats until they were 30 lbs even if we did have a seat with a higher weight limit.

  • Mine outgrew by height first too. I think they were around 16-18 lbs.

  • We had the Graco Snugrides with the 22-lb weight limit. Alex was just under 22 lbs at 7.5m so we went ahead and switched both. (Will didn't hit 22 lbs till about 13m.) I personally was really glad we went with the classic Snugrides for the reason you mentioned; they're plenty heavy, especially when you have two to carry. I would've hated having even heavier car seats and probably would've stopped using them sooner, making the higher weight limit pointless. I know some people are really happy with the higher weight limit; that's just my take.

  • And yeah, Alex outgrew by weight first. Will would've outgrown by height first except we'd already switched him.

  • Oh man, good luck with the 30lb carseats.  I got the 22lb, and I stopped using my carseats even before the babies reached the limit.  DS is 21lbs, and while technically he could still use it, I switched them over to convertible.  Plus you have to add the weight of the carseat.  So I was basically carrying 40+lbs of babies.

um yea, it got too heavy.  Now I wear a moby, and plop one on, while I carry the other in my free arm.  It's still hard to do, but less weight and easier than 2 bulky carseats.

  • I never carried the twins in their car seats.  I lifted the car seats out of the car and dropped them right into the double Snap and Go stroller.

I could never manage to carry 2 car seats at once nor am I strong enough.

We have Graco Snugride 35 and the kids are still in them at 9 months and I am not looking to move them anytime soon!!  I love my infant seat and SNG stroller.  Its the most covenient way to get about.

At 9 months, daughter is 15 lbs and 27" and son is 20 lbs and 29".

The car seat goes to 35 lbs and 32", so I have a ways to go yet before I have to move them to convertible seats.

and with Michigan winter weather, I don't want to move them until I absolutely have to.

  • We stopped using ours when the girls were around 16 lbs (8 months).  They just got too heavy, and Tannah was getting very close to the height limit (29 inches on ours).  I do miss the convenience of being able to throw blankets over them and not having to buckle them in/out while outside.
  • Thanks everyone!  Just because it's ending up a heck of a lot cheaper, I think I'll stick with the 22# one and move to a convertible after they outgrow that.  I do have a double SNG, but since the weather is fairly mild here I don't mind grabbing them out of their seats when they're a little older.

  • I just want to say that I love just about everything Graco... their products are very well made & you rarely hear about any recalls concerning their equipment. Baby Trend is good too.
