Nutramigen for Colic

DS is just developing colic so I picked up some Nutramigen today. I was shocked at the price ($34!), but figure it will be worth it if it helps any. The evenings are so hard on us. Has anyone used Nutramigen for LO's colic-and did it help at all? When did you start to see a difference in LO? Also, any advice on how to deal with the stress of a colicky baby?

Re: Nutramigen for Colic

  • Did you talk to your pediatrician first? Jumping straight to hypoallergenic formula seems like the wrong response to developing colic unless you know he's fussing because of an allergy.

  • Yes DS is on it and yes it has helped. We use the premixed ( much more expensive) but our ped suggested it because it's a little thicker that powder and helps with acid reflux. We also add 1 tsp of rice cereal (per or ped). We also give LO gas drops before EVERY bottle and colic calm in the morning and at night. If you haven't already heard about colic calm look it up and then go get some!! It really does help. It's bit major and won't make it go away but it helps!! All these things combined have help tremendously. Hope this help!!

  • We tried Nutramigen when my DS was about 2 months old at the suggestion of a pediatric GI doctor.  We saw an improvement in less than 24 hours, he actually stopped crying long enough to sleep for a couple hours!  But it didn't completely "cure" his colic.  After being on Nutramigen for a couple weeks we still had digestion issues so we switched to Neocate which had to be ordered through a pharmacy and was even more expensive.

As for dealing with the stress, just keep in mind that it will pass.  Your LO will outgrow the colic.  It sucks dealing with a colicky baby and can be really hard on a marriage, just hang in there.  And you're not a bad parent even though your LO cries ALL OF THE TIME. Also, if you think there is something wrong, talk to your pedi and make sure they listen.  Our pedi kind of just blew us off and made us feel like overreactive first time parents.  We found a pediatric GI doc who took us more seriously which led to a prescription formula which resulted in a much happier baby.
