I love ice skating with my husband and friends, even though I'm not the best at it :-) Since I'm no pro, there is the chance that I may fall, at least on my knees. Does this mean I need to forfeit that joy this winter?
I just took my 3 year old last week again. Obviously if I was more like 20 + weeks I wouldn't because of balance and the likelyhood of falling. Also with skating you tend to fall backwards rather than forwards. Just no triple sow-cows lol.
Definitely check with your doctor, but I would say it's probably fine. With stuff like skiing and snowboarding it's a little different since the falls are harder and more dangerous. Your chances of getting seriously injured are also significantly greater with skiing/snowboarding than they are with ice skating. I'd say, go, go slow, and if you notice that you're falling quite a bit, maybe sit out after 20 minutes. Like the PP said though, I'd skip the triple sow cows!
If you aren't good at ice skating and plan on falling- common sense should tell you to skip it. There's no way to guarantee you'll fall only on your knees.
ETA: I'm not saying that pregnant women are fragile little flowers, but a hard fall could cause issues with your pregnancy. I love to snowboard and have a trip planned a few weeks from now, but DH will be on the slopes without me and I'll be curled up in the lodge with a book.
I don't know how far along you are, but I'm guessing firs tri since you are posting on this board.
I horseback ride (competitively, have since I was a kid), so I was concerned about continuing this activity while pregnant in case of a fall. I'll pass along what two doctors told me.
In the first trimester, a fall is very unlikely to hurt the baby because your uterus is still protected by your pelvis. So, I'm guessing the chance of a fall while ice skating resulting in direct harm to your baby is probably minimal.
HOWEVER, there is risk to hurting other parts of your body. For example, if you fall and break your wrist, you'll need an x-ray, which is of course is risky for the baby.
Both docs cleared me to ride for the first trimester. What I did is work with my trainer to minimize the risk of a fall (obviously nothing is 100% safe) by changing my activities as well as the horses I ride.
Since you're a casual ice-skater, if I were you, I would skip it, unless you are planning on going 0 miles an hour the entire time
I wouldnt go if you think you will fall. I just went but I felt comfortable skating while Im not showing. listen to your docs advice and just be careful!

I ride competitively as well and this is what my Dr. told me regarding fall potential.ok to ride through 1st tri.
I haven't been riding because I had an injury in Oct and wasn't cleared for riding again until 12/27. Got BFP on 12/31 - so since I wasn't in riding shape anyways, any my horse is out of shape, I decided there wasn't a point to ride for 6ish weeks. And it's cold, and I like to sleep in (I typically get up at 4ish am to ride before work).
You'd probably be ok ice skating, but maybe skip it to be safe. Personally, I'd probably still do it, but that's me.

Thank you all! I was figuring I probably shouldn't, though it hadn't honestly entered my mind not to until my husband mentioned the fact of endangering the baby.
This is my first pregnancy, so even though I'm in my 10th week, I'm still almost in denial and the reality of the fact that I'm ACTUALLY PREGNANT is still a bit astounding and daunting I'm still in the process of finding a midwife, so I haven't been to a doctor yet :-/ I will find something else to do with my hubby
Re: Is Ice-skating safe???
Sorry I can't tell you if you're going to fall on your face or butt, that's up to gravity to decide. If you're not good at skating then skip it.
Since falling in general during a pg warrants a call to your OB - common sense would suggest that it is not a good idea.
CRAFTY ME

I agree with this
