I know William is ranked 5 nationally, and it's actually number 1 for my state according to the SSA. Name nerds places it at 9 because they include other spellings for names like Aiden, Caden etc. But either way- incredibly popular.
But, do you think since there's so many nick names available and it's a classic name that the popularity issue isn't as big of a problem as it is for other names?
It's DH's grandfather's name and DH has had his heart set on it for a long time.
Re: William and it's popularity
"A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."
Hey, it's my grandfather's name, too!
I would use it if he's so set on it. It's a great name, and it has a great number of nicknames, like you mentioned (my favorite is Bill ^^ ).
William is my 2 year old DS's name. I know that it is "up there" on the charts, but I have yet to meet a single other William.
I have, however, met 15 each of Cooper, Ethan, Aidan, Carter, etc.
It's a classic. I am obviously biased, but I say go for it
LOVE William. DH and I are planning on using it for our first boy, it was my grandfather's name too! I think the reasoning behind not using popular names is that most tend to be super trendy for a little while and then go out of style just as quickly. Classic names are different, they're popular because they never go out of style. If you love it, go for it.
But for the love of God don't change the spelling. Especially with a y. Ugh.
This is what I think too. There are so many nn possibilities too, and William is nice on its own w/o a nn.
