VBAC

Good articles supporting VBAC...

I'm looking for some good articles supporting VBAC. My DH did some research yesterday, and is now terrified that if we try a VBAC that I will die. He's most worried about uterine rupture, which I understood to be related to a no-longer-used labor augmentation medication.

Any help would be very appreciated. I want DH and I to be on the same page about this - it's super important to me to have a VBAC after my first birth, so I'm really hoping to find something that will help convince DH that it's best for me and the baby to do VBAC.

  • Someone here has a good list of links that I am sure they will post for you.  FWIW, it is my understanding that YOU are more likely to die during a rcs than a VBAC.  Also, take him to speak to your VBAC supportive provider when you are ready to have another baby.  My DH was nervous until he had a good talk with my mdwife.  Hearing it from a professional really helped him.

Awesome, I'll be happy to read all I can.

Also? I'm already pregnant again. It was a surprise (more like a shock, haha), but I'm very, very interested in doing a VBAC, since we'd planned a completely drug-free and natural birth for the first one.

  • If your husband is worried about you dying during a VBAC, tell him that you are three times more likely to die during a repeat cesarean and four times more likely to die in a car accident on your way home from work today.  Sorry if that sounds morbid, but the odds of the mother dying in a VBAC are truly miniscule.

VBAC does carry an increased risk of death for the baby, but again the odds of that happening are very low. The important thing to remember is that whether you have a VBAC or RCS, by far the most likely outcome is a healthy mother and a healthy baby.

I'll get you a source for these statistics, hold on.

  • This is a good post:

    https://vbacfacts.com/2009/08/18/lightning-strikes-shark-bites-uterine-rupture/

The whole vbacfacts.com site is good, she has more posts about UR: https://vbacfacts.com/category/vbac/uterine-rupture/

The National Institute of Health recently came out for VBAC, this site is about their recommendations:

    https://givingbirthwithconfidence.org/2-2/a-womans-guide-to-vbac/

ACOG officially also supports VBAC in most cases:

    https://www.vbac.com/acogs-revised-vbac-guidelines/

The rate of uterine rupture is about .7% - it's roughly the same as the chance of a cord prolapse happening, and you don't see people freaking out about that during pregnancy :). And it's your body, your choice at the end of the day. Good luck!

  • Hmm I can't seem to get the link to copy from my ipad right now, but what you want is the NIH VBAC Consensus Statement.  Just Google that or maybe someone else here can post the link.

Oops!  Sorry, that was my mistake.  Somehow I read your post as you were thinking about another baby and you were looking for info.  I didn't look at your siggy.  In that case, bring the man to an appt and have the doc convince him.
