Supply issue with antibiotic

DS is 14 months and nurses twice a day (beginning of day and before bedtime).  I have had a terrible head cold the past week and have gotten a z-pack to knock it out.  It's classified as a B drug while pregnant but has not been tested (or tested well enough) on breastfeeding moms, so I am not going to nurse DS for the 5 days I'm on the z-pack.

I am worried that my supply will tank, especially since he nurses twice a day (and more for comfort -- about 5 minutes total each time on most days).

I guess I'm looking for encouragement that my supply won't completely diminish over the next few days?  I had planned on weaning him around March -- I guess it wouldn't be terrible if it just happened to be now?

Re: Supply issue with antibiotic

  • Children over 6 months can be prescribed azithromycin. I would breastfeed through, no question. The slight dose won't harm your older baby.

  • My dr gave me a z-pack and said it was safe for BFing (that's why he prescribed that one).  But he said she might not like the way it could make my BM taste and not want to nurse.  I took the whole z-pack and she did same as always, gobbled it up.  You could always pump and dump.  Just twice a day that wouldn't be too inconvenient.

  • Couldn't you pump and dump during this time, if you don't feel comfortable giving your LO the BM, just so that your supply stays up?

  • Yes! Thank you so much, ladies!! I will continue through the pack.  DS is fighting a small cold too (almost always impossible to keep him from getting sick if DH and I are both sick).

    Thank you!

  • I've been sick since last Thursday, so a week.  I babysat some friends' kids this Tuesday too who had fevers and hacking coughs, so that certainly hasn't helped!
