Intro to the Paci?

So the LC at the hospital with my dd told me that I should not introduce the paci until much later due to nipple confusion. Well when I tried she HATED it and had become a thumb sucker. We only BF for a week when we switched to the bottle.

Anyway, this time around we are going to make it work. Due to SEVERAL reasons.

Anyway, when did you introduce the paci? I think my dd wanted to suck on me becuase she wasn't getting that sucking she so needed. So I don't want to make that mistake with my son.

So what do you ladies think???

Thanks

I am having a c-section on Sunday so I don't have much time left.

Re: Intro to the Paci?

  • HI there! To start with every baby is different from what I am told (FTM).  I was totally against having a paci, that being said - day after my LO was born my pedi and nurses suggested she have a paci due to the fact that she was continually sucking and sucked on everything, hands, bottom lip, ME.  So we gave the paci - 9 months later we still have the paci for naps, sleep and carseat time.  We didn't have any confusion thank goodness! We also introduced the bottle at 3 weeks once a day so that it was an easy transition to daycare!  Good Luck and we wish you a safe delivery!

I am just lurking over here but I have asked some of my friends that already have babies and do bf what they did. And almost all of them said they gave LO a pacifier right from the start. They did suggest using the Philips Avent or something like them, due to them being shaped more like a nipple. I plan on using the first years gumdrop from BRU.

  • In the hospital we were adamant that our baby not get a paci, so much so that my DH would not even request one for our 2 year old niece who wanted one to take a map, lest the nurses get confused. Ha! That lasted until we were hone for about 36 hours before he was shoving a paci in her face. I wouldn't worry about it, I've never heard of a baby not being able to bf because they had a paci. Just make sure you offer the breast before giving it each time!

  • We gave our LO a paci fairly early on (in the first 2 weeks) out of desperation.  She has a bad latch, but it's not because of the paci because she has been latching poorly from the get-go and my LC assured me that her latching issues are not due to nipple confusion.  Stick with the ones the hospital gives (soothies) or gumdrops because they encourage babies to open wider than the traditional pacis.  Also, thanks for calling it a paci instead of a binky.  Binky is super annoying.

  • We waited till 3 weeks out before offering a pacifier.  Before then we used a clean pinky as recommended by the doctors, nurses, and lactation consultants.
