Inverted Nipple

I haven't checked with my provider yet to verify, but I'm pretty sure I have inverted nipples.  When I apply pressure to the edges of my areola, the nipple sinks in instead of popping out. What does this mean for my plans to breastfeed? Can I still do it? If so, is there something I'll have to do differently than most women?

Re: Inverted Nipple

  • You may need to use a nipple shield to aid in bf'ing. Or you might try pumping for a minute to draw your nipple out and then put baby to the breast. I would definitely seek help from a lactation consultant for tips. You certainly can bf with inverted nipples, it just might take a little extra effort.
