3rd Trimester

Just found out I need a c-section...

We have known since 20 wks that he is breech I just assumed he flipped recently. The Dr. couldnt tell 3 weeks ago when I went in. And just now she said she felt a head I was so excited. We went in to verify it with an ultrasound, and nope it was his butt. He is breech and they want to schedule my c-section for 39weeks. I havent prepared myself for this thought, we took the birthing classes and all I have been thinking about was natural labor. I dont know why I was so surprised, I mean I almost cried in her office as she talked me through the idea of a c-section.

I guess I better start thinking about this differently now. :)

Re: Just found out I need a c-section...

  • That really sucks. :(

There are some options you can try to make your baby turn though.  Acupuncture, inverted positions in the pool, or having a skilled physician try to turn it from the outside.   Good luck!

  • Loading the player...
  • Can they manually try to flip the baby. I've read about that, although it said that it is very uncomfortable for the mother. I am planning on a natural childbirth too, and a c-section is the last thing I would like. Good luck!
  • My OB said if he's breech at 37 weeks we'll discuss c-section. Why is your Doc so quickly jumping to it when you have a ton of time for the baby to move around??
  • You're 34 wks? Isn't there still time? My baby didn't flip head down until 35 wks. I wouldn't bet on the need for a c/s until closer to the end.

  • I agree explore your options.  However, this is a medically needed reason for a C so I wouldn't beat yourself up about it!  GL and keep us posted!
  • I am having a c-section on Monday b/c my baby is breech.  It certainly is not how I imagined I would have my baby, but it will get her here safely and keep me safe too.  My DH & I talked about all of the other options and decided that we were most comfortable with a c-section and not to try an eversion or anything like that....you will be fine and like I said, this is what is best for you and your baby and that is all that counts!  good luck!

  • Have you considered trying a version?  Even if that's not possible, the baby could still turn.  Hang in there, and good luck w/ whatever happens!
  • WOW your Dr. seems to be jumping the gun. This little guy is breach too, but I was told that they can flip up to 36-27 weeks. My Dr. will not even talk c-section until then.

  • I will have a c-section sometime next week since my baby is still breech. I researched doing a version and definitely decided against it.

    I just look at the positives of a c-section now : )

  • I know it's not what you have in mind for your L&D, but if it comes to having a C, just try to keep your mind on the end goal: having a healthy baby. Good luck to you!
  • Don't beat yourself up.  There are lots of good points to a C.  I'm scheduled for one myself due to a complicated 1st delivery and frankly I'm relieved.

A friend of mine tried the version twice to turn the baby manually and she said it was horribly painful and the baby flipped back anyway.

  • I agree the dr is JUMPING the gun on scheduling a c-section.  S/he should at least TRY to do an external version, or wait until labor since some babies DO turn head down right before or during labor.

Check out spinningbabies.com (?) and see what methods YOU can try to encourage baby to move head down.  My Childbirth instructor, did everything from putting frozen pea bags on top of her belly, to taking a flashlight to her crotch & had her DH talk to the baby to move towards the light (LOL).  It worked for them.

Also, GO to a chiropractor who specializes in WEBSTER'S TECHNIQUE!  That has a VERY high success rate in turning baby head down, and once the baby is head down, go back if needed, for reassurance.

I've had a c-section, and I WISH someone had said, there were ways to help baby turn head down...instead of just blindly following my ex-dr told me.

Another thing, my current ob (love her!), even says before she does a c-section for breech is to try an external version to move baby, and if baby either won't budge, or flips back--schedules a c-section.

    Good luck!!
