Birth Story 19 months later <3 Warning: it's kind of graphic.

If I've posted this before I'm sorry. I'm still not "over" it and I was thinking maybe if I shared it then that would help some :)

June 20, 2010 was my due date. I tried EVERYTHING I could think of to get her to come on her own on that day. Well, she didn't. I had a doctor's appointment the next day and due to my BP being in the 200's they decided to induce.

Everything went fine that day. I got the Cervidil (sp?) and that started some light contractions. I progressed to 4cm before I even knew it. Then my water broke and I shot to 6cm. Still not much pain with the contractions, but I went ahead and got the epi anyway because I had a feeling things would pick up.

The epi only worked on half my body so they gave me some medicine through my IV to relax me. I slept through the night and rested up until it was time to push around 1:00pm on June 22, 2010. I was actually pretty exhausted even after sleeping through the night. I was in pain and I knew something wasn't right. It was just a feeling I had. I kept telling the nurse that I wanted a c-section and she kept saying "no you don't it's major surgery". I pushed and pushed. Finally felt her head move down and then I knew that there was no turning back. I remember her head coming out and I asked the doctor if she was going back in. He and my husband laughed and said "no". Well, then his face changed to panic. He told my husband to hit the call button. That wasn't fast enough and he yelled out into the hall for help. The room quickly filled with people and they pushed my terrified husband up against the wall. I vaguely remember the doctor asking who it would be if it came down to that. My husband just stared at him.

Gracie was stuck by her shoulder due to my pubic bone being at an odd angle. He had five minutes to get her out and breathing. It took about a minute and half to get her out. He tried everything he could from the outside, but finally had to tear me to make room for his hand and he reached in and grabbed her arm over her head so that she would have enough room to get out. When she came out she wasn't breathing, wasn't moving, but her heart was beating very slowly. I found out that is the only thing she scored on her APGAR. Her heart beat. And that was a '1'. I kept asking why wasn't she crying. Finally after about 2 minutes of her being without oxygen they got her breathing. And then crying. Longest 2 minutes of my life.

Her little right arm was limp. She couldn't move it at all. The pressure of it against my pubic bone had paralyzed the nerves. They said that she would have to see a specialist, but she should be fine.

Know how they say that you forget the pain of childbirth? Yeah, I didn't. Don't think I ever will.

But, here it is 19 months later and she is perfect. No lasting effects of oxygen deprivation. Her arm is fine. We do think she is left handed but that's just fine. She is a tornado of energy. And smart as a whip. She has my heart and I don't know what I would ever do without her :)

I, too, had a traumatic birth.  It's only been 4 weeks, but I can't imagine getting over it.  Hugs!  You've got an adorable daughter!

Do you ever feel jealous when you hear of all the women with "easy" deliveries? I know I shouldn't, but I do. Hugs to you too! Your DD is adorable as well! Love your siggy :)
