switching providers at 6 months- WWYD?

Hi ladies,

I was on here in a previous life. But I have a question. DH and I just found out that baby #2 is high risk. This all went down unexpectedly over the past few days when we found out I was having contractions and my cervix had shrunk.

I have not been very impressed with my dr's reaction to all this- they didn't call in the progesterone prescription until I called to follow up about it and have been little help in getting the home infusion therapy folks to move a little faster (I still don't have it). Plus I don't like the hospital they are affiliated with. We went there Friday and there were three women in labor in the triage department- with no available room in sight! I found a dr. who I would like to transfer to and they are affiliated with the hospital I now want to deliver at, but WWYD? Big decision, so I thought I better check with my fellow moms. Thanks!

  • I would definitely switch.  Go with your gut!  Keeping you and DH in my thoughts!

  • if you're high risk, i'd find a good maternal fetal practice that is accepting new patients and switch. the last thing you need is added stress, and it's a bonus if you wind up being able to deliver at the hospital you prefer. but if you really like the doctor and practice otherwise, maybe give them a heads up as to why you are leaving?

don't know where you're located, but i was a patient for a few weeks at GWMFM after my regular OB discovered H had an arrythmia in utero. Dr. Pinckert is amazing!

  • your baby's health and yours, are the most impt things and if you feel as if your current OB is not putting a high enough priority on your concerns, switch!

  • Definitely switch. You have enough to worry about without being concerned that your dr's aren't caring for your properly.

My pregnancy was high risk b/c it was twins and b/c my cervix started to decreased starting at 20-22w. I spent 13+ weeks on bedrest (a month of that in the hospital), and one of the things that kept me sane was that I 100% trusted my OB (CWC in Alexandria) and perinatologists (Peri Associates of Northern Virginia) and that I was getting the best care possible.

  • definitely switch, you need to do what makes you most comfortable.  I also saw GWMFM for our 12 week optional screen and then until week 24 or so because they were concerned my initial results were abnormal (and then each visit turned up something new that all in all turned out to be nothing).

I LOVED Dr. Prinkert as pp also mentioned, however I really disliked Dr. Gallagher - he was the one who gave us the "abnormal" result based only on the nuchal fold (and not the blood work or nasal bone).  I felt he really pushed for a CSV or amneo and when I told the genetic counselor that I felt like we didn't have the full information to make that call so soon, I heard him say to the her, "I don't know why she wants to wait for the bloodwork, it's going to be abnormal..." and that really bothered me.  Turns out my bloodwork came back so great that it actually lowered our risk for abnormalities.

Dr. Prinkert was always reassuring, even when he did see something that might be a concern, he was great about putting it in perspective and keeping me at ease - he seemed such a contrast to Dr. G, I don't know how they work together!

Long story short, trust your feelings and get a provider you feel good about.

  • I would switch.  I think a new doc would easily be able to get filled in our your backstory and deliver you without any drama or problems.
