Mastitis, boo

Anyone else had this joy yet? This is the second time... first time started overnight and cleared up on it's own. Still have a 101 fever this time, though, so getting ABs. Any recommendations on how to keep it from recurring again? Herbal anything that helps?

Re: Mastitis, boo

  • I'm so sorry you have to deal with that.  I had it too, three weeks ago.  I am really hoping to not get it again.  I started block feeding my LO which cut down my supply so I am hoping that prevents me getting it again.  I also switched all my bras to the Bravado brand sports bra type.  I was using cheaper underwire ones before and I think that may have contributed to my mastistis too.  Hope you start feeling better soon!

  • I had it when LO was about a month old.  Definitely make sure your bra and clothes arent too tight.  try to avoid bras with underwire.  If LO has a bad latch sometimes I heard that can cause it too.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • I have had it twice.  Last time I had 103.2 fever.  Sucked. Bad.
  • I just got over my second round of it. I had called the doctor and gotten antibiotics thankfully. I had a fever just above 102 both times, and this second time I ended up getting way sick: lethargic, extreme pain, vomiting, etc. It has since cleared but I am not sure my supply will be back up to where it was before. It tanked this second time (the first time it went down but went back to where it was - this was a week after DD was born).

I also agree with PPs - not tight clothes and no underwire bras. Keep those puppies loose. I'm trying to be really really good about getting every last drop out of my breasts after each feeding.

I am hoping for a speedy recovery for you -- I know first hand that this sucks SO bad!

  • I had it too, but it cleared up in a day, I just had LO nurse on that side as often as possible and massaged at the same time (although that hurt like a son of a btch).  Good luck!

I'd agree with the *massage*. I still do it regular as I pump and breastfeed. I had mastitis around week 4.

  • My midwives said to take lecithin to avoid getting it again.  There's info on kellymom.com about lecithin and recurrent plugged ducts.
