Celiac Disease?!

Hey! Hope ya'll are fabulous! Question: Anyone have a toddler with Celiac Disease? We are to start the celiac diet for Drake due to unexplained vomiting that is about 2 to 3 times a week and ALWAYS having explosive poops, along with a few other things. Anyone have a babe with CD? Just wanting to know how you knew, and what were the signs that led to this diagnosis. Thanks!!!

Re: Celiac Disease?!

  • If you are planning to test for celiacs, you would want to test before starting a GF diet. If do start a GF diet and see that things get better and then want to test for celiacs later you would have to eat gluten again for 2-3 weeks before doing the test otherwise you could get a false negative. My DH is gluten intolerant, he discovered this on his own by removing gluten from his diet and then found out he would have to start back a normal diet again to get tested for celiacs. He decided it was not worth torturing his digestive system for 2-3 weeks only to be told not to eat gluten. My DD is also gluten intolerant, we have not had her tested for celiacs, don't know if we ever will because we don't want to have to put her on a normal diet for several weeks.

  • PP is correct regarding starting the diet and getting tested. You usually have to have gluten IN your diet when you do the testing. It sounds like you are doing an elimination diet.  Has your LO already been tested for Celiac's? Is that why you are starting the diet? Ultimately, there are blood tests (not 100% accurate) that test for Celiac's and a biopsy of the small intestine can be done also. The biopsy is actually the best tool to use for diagnostic purposes. Celiac Disease ruins the small villi of the small intestine and generally causes a lot of gut issues.
