Breastfeeding

Please stop me from giving up

Last night I was so tempted to give up BF. I Went all day just BF LO appox every 3 hours. I tried pumping but got less than 1 oz total each time I tried. I pumped 2 times. So maybe I thought I have to change the membrane on the pump maybe that might be why I have such a small amount. So this morning at 5 am i trid pumping and I stillk got less than 1 oz.

Then I started thinking about LO's diapers I did notice a decrease in her wet diapers since I stopped supplementing with formula. She had about 4 yesterday, but they werent as heavy as the ones from before. I really dont want to give her the formula but Im really worried. Im trying everything, the tea, oatmeal, the lactation cookies.

This morning I fed her about 4 times already.  Im increase the time she spends nursing and feeding her on demand. I will try doing it every hour today. What would you ladies do? Please stop me from giving up.

  • Are you pumping and also nursing? It's normal to get only a tiny bit if you're also nursing b/c you're baby is draining you out first. I get the most from pumping while LO is at daycare.

  • You can do it!  Feed on demand and watch the wet diapers.  Keep a log to review with your pedi if you are still concerned.  You are doing a great job!

  • Make sure you're getting enough water and eating enough.  Definitely feed on demand.  You can also get a nurser which will allow LO to get formula while breastfeeding.  That way LO gets enough to eat but you're still stimulating your breasts which will encourage more milk production.  Don't give up!  Some breastmilk is better than none.  Give yourself a pat on the back for trying.  It's not easy (for most of us).  And keep in mind the most important thing is your baby is fed and healthy.  You're not a failure if you have to supplement.  How old is baby?  My first week was rough but we're doing fine now.  Hang in there!

  • If you're weaning off formula, you've got to give your body a chance to make more milk and give your baby a chance to build up the endurance to nurse instead of bottle feed.

Hang in there. Offer the breast as often as you can during the day - if she's awake, put her to the breast every hour, like you said. Don't let it go longer than 3 hours. If you pump, offer her that milk after she breastfeeds.

  • She 1 month and 5 days . Do you know of a nurser you can recommend ?

Are you working with a lactation consultant? Have to talked to a La Leche leader? Some in person help would be good, if you can get it. La Leche is free.

  • Are you new to pumping?  When I first started pumping when my DS was around 5 weeks, I had a hard time getting any expressed milk with the pump, even though I obviously had milk.  It took me a number of tries to learn how to relax for the letdown and then how to get the pump to work most efficiently for me.  But I still don't get as much milk with the pump as I should be.  Basically what I'm trying to say is that pumped milk does not equal how many ounces your LO is actually getting "straight from the tap!"

  • when my LO was that young i only got an ounce too. By the time she was 2 or so months (maybe older) i would get a lot more (in the mornings) when i would pump after feeding her.

    don't give up!

To me, this sounds like a good, thing.  If you are feeding her and then pumping its normal to not get much.  Its a good thing because it shows she is draining the breast.  I would try to do a day (24 hours) of nursing as much as possible.

  • You're doing great!  1 oz is really good after 15 minutes after feeding her.  I pumped after feeding my LO for a few weeks to help my supply and usually only got .5-.75 ounces.  It's hard as a FTM, I still worry about having a good supply and my LO is 4 months old and growing great!
