18 months old--suddenly can't fall asleep on her own

Lyla was always a good sleeper through the nighter; but we always had to rock her to sleep in our arms. Around 7 months we did sleep training (CIO) and it was painless and she pretty easily started just putting herself to sleep, no rocking, no nuthin! Suddenly 2 nights ago (tonight is the 3rd), she will be happy as a clam, we do the bed time routine and when I go to put her in the crib she goes APE SH!T. Not just crying, not just fake whining, but full on shuttering, can't catch her breath crying. I even let her go for like 25 minutes, but it was clear she wasn't going to go down and I was afraid she would vomit on herself. Tonight, same thing. Luckily, my mom is here and is up there soothing her into a deep sleep.... but seriously, I can't do this every night. Has anyone had this happen?? It's just so strange... she has been great for a year. I know she isn't hungry because she ate more than average today and drank WAY more milk than usual--including moments before putting her down in the crib.

Help!!

  • My first reaction is ear infection - she may be fine sitting up, but it could hurt when she lies down.

We were just at doctor Friday, had them check--no ear infection. She had been sick late last week, vomiting. Though even during that, she seemed happy as a clam... except when she barfed.

  • This happened to us a few weeks ago--I think partly as a result of weaning. But same deal--he's been able to put himself to sleep since like 8 months and then BAM just went nuts crying hysterically for me, I had to rock him to sleep. I still don't know the real cause, but he just gradually snapped out of it before too long. So, no advice, just wanted to say been there, done that and hopefully she'll just snap out of it too.

Libby has a good point though--I'd make sure to rule out any illness.
