Another "is my kid the only one"

JT does this rocking back and forth thing - it's actually front to back (not side to side). Sometimes he'll do it fast and hard and sometimes it's a soft rocking. He's usually in the high chair when he does it. It does make the high chair move a bit which I know he likes but he's been doing this for quite some time.

I don't even want to repeat what DH read about this online....

Anyone else's kid do this?

Re: Another "is my kid the only one"

  • Yes, she has done that but with an added head bang (usually when she is sitting against a wall or piece of furniture).  It's not violent but it is loud enough to make you look twice.

I plan to talk to pedi about this tomorrow - last time I asked she told me it can just be a soothing method but DH has me nervous.

Poor thing - hope she doesn't hurt her head too bad!!

  • Unless you keep LO in a crib 24-7 and withhold all mental stimulation it's not what your H googled. Heh. Mine doesn't rock, but she has her own little wackadoo behaviors that mean she's goign to grow up a serial killer according to Dr Google. Punch your H in the junk and ask your pedi about it if you're super concerned.

  • I definitely think it is self soothing.  Babies do weird stuff sometimes.  They have no filters.
  • I would mention it to the pedi tomorrow. I would be a little worried too, but I'm sure its nothing.

  • I really don't think it's anything to worry about. DD is sitting on the floor eating a craker and rocking up to her knees every so often right now - or rocking back and forth. Babies don't know anything about societal norms so they just do what they do. They have a lot to discover about how the world works and how their bodies move. I'm pretty sure 12 month olds in normal homes don't show evidence of sexual deviant behavior (and probably don't have any at this point either) or whatever other creepy things you might have read about online.

  • DD does that too sometimes. Usually in her high chair. From what I've read, it's their way of getting rid of excess energy.

  • E does this too.  I said something at her 9 month appointment and they said unless it's an all the time thing and she's not developing properly then it's no big deal.  Just one of those weird things babies do sometimes.  E is usually laughing or screeching (happy screech) when she does it too.

This is what the pedi said today.
