? from a FTM

Hello everyone.

I am a first time mom, going to EBF. I am going to have to go back to work within 6 or 8 weeks, so I wanted to be prepared to pump as well.

For those who have done this before, is a double electric pump really the best way to go? Or would I be ok with a single electric? I've even heard people can get more milk from using a manual pump. Ah!

Any advice would be awesome :) Thanks!

  • You def want a double electric if you are going back to work!

  • You need a double electric. A single would take twice as long - and you probably don't have the breaks to waste time.

Most people get either the Medela Pump in Style Advance or the Ameda Purely Yours.

  • Double electric and possibly a Medela manual if you have extra money laying around.

I can pump with a Symphony or a Pump in Style and still get another oz or two with the manual pump.  The manual is nice to have in case your pump dies unexpectedly, you forget your pump, you get caught somewhere, etc.  I keep it in my car.

  • I got the ameda purely yours today and I pumped more than I got with my medela rental from the hospital.  It's a little louder, but I like it.  I'm a teacher, so I won't have a lot of time to pump, so double electric was the only way to go for me.
  • Ditto to pp. I use Medela Pump in Style. I have only been using it to build a stash so far. Next week will be my first time using it at work.

  • Definitely need a double electric! My insurance covered a large portion of the cost- look into that if it's $$ that has you worried.

  • Get them all LOL  I have a double electric and a single electric.  The double works faster of course because it's a double and it's good for work for that reason.  But those things die.  I used mine a month and it was already lagging.  Definitely get a back up.  I leave it at work and use the single at home.  To me it's more like BFing because you're doing one side at a time and you can use the other hand to do compression.  Plus the suction on that little $40 cheapy single is actually better than the double...  I'm going to get a manual one too because I've heard they work even better than the electric.  Plus it's always nice to have a spare that doesn't need 8 batteries or an adapter you have to buy separately.
