We went in for a normal monthly checkup, within 5 min i went from having a normal pregnancy to a high risk. I was sent over to the hospital immediately and put on bed rest for a week until my little boy decided he wanted to enter this world, for the first week he was doing amazing breathing well no major problems. Then he got sick had gbs with meningitis he was given antibiotics for a month and we thought everything would be fine, 4 days after the antibiotics stopped he was sick again same thing, ( Infectious disease doctors came to see him because they had never seen a baby get sick like this twice) but worst lost his ability to breath and had fluid in his lungs it was the scariest day in my life and all i could thing was i caused this my little boy might not make it because of me. All his picc lines would go bad and had been threatened to be taken to a stage 3 hospital 4 hrs away... he pulled through but 3 days after the second round of antibiotics we received a phone call that his retina's were starting to detach and needed to be flown to the stage 3 hospital to undergo surgery to keep his eye sight. After spending 2 weeks in a place we didn't know they told us they would fly our son back down to the hospital closer to our home, thankfully we returned home and he learned how to breath on his own. We finally were able to bring him home yesterday after a 4 month battle of ups and downs. It still feels surreal that we were able to take him home because once you enter the world of the nicu you wonder if your ever going to be able to get away from it. I always felt like i was alone in my journey, but i know now that im not.
Re: 26 week preemie
welcome HOME.. we were in our nicu for 4 months too (125 days to be exact)..and the first few days home felt good..but certainly weird because ..or surreal.. give yourself time to adjust..
good luck!
Welcome home to your son! You definitely rode the NICU rollercoaster. My son also had a long NICU stay - 147 days - and ROP surgery. He's now almost 19 months and doing great. The memories of the NICU never go away, but they do lessen with time.
Enjoy your son, post often (so many of us DO understand what you went through) and relish every milestone that your fighter meets!
Congrats on your son and on bringing him home! We had a relatively short stay (31 days) in comparison, and that was terrifying so my heart goes out to you! You have found strength you probably never knew you had, and you will be an AMAZING mother for it! Lots of love and support from all of your fellow preemie Moms here:)
Enjoy having your LO home!
