Breastfeeding

For those who converted from nipple shield to none...

Did you notice that LO ate for less amounts of time?  I used to do around ten minutes on each side with the nipple shield.  Now, I am lucky to get 12-15 mins total.  Do they get more milk right from the breast?

  • we have been nipple shield free for 1 week!! yay us!!

i agree that our nursing sessions use to be around 12 mins on each side with the shield..and now that we are shield free Cooper is only nursing on 1 side each feeding for about 12 mins. I feel like he gets fuller faster and seems more satistisfied...hopefully he still is gaining! he is 11lbs 11oz as of yesterday! (my big boy!! up from 9 something 2 weeks ago)

  • I noticed the same thing as well when we ditched the shield. I always thought that perhaps the milk just comes out faster when they suck right from the boob so they get full faster. I don't know for sure though. DS has continued to gain weight though so I never really worried about it. I just let him eat until he pulls away.
  • Yes, without the shield they get the same amount faster and it is possible to get more out. As long as your LO seems satisfied after the 12-15 minutes, and there are enough wet/dirty diapers, don't worry about it. When I first weaned from the nipple shield, I was getting so frustrated that my DS wouldn't latch on to the 2nd side. Turns out he was getting 3oz in 7 minutes on 1 side and was just full before he ever got to the other side!

  • What a relief!  And time saver!!  She doesn't seem hungry, but isn't nursing as much, so I was worried.  Her poops are slowing down, but I think it is because she is getting older.  We had a poop per diaper, and now we have one HUGE poop a day and little squirts in other ones...She goes to the dr on Thurs and I know she is gaining weight!!

  • Shield or not DD still takes forever - 30 minutes each side.  She just hangs out at the boob.  We were at the mall this weekend and used it, at home and nursed without it, same amount of time for each.  They are supposed to get more milk without the shield though, that's why it's sometimes cause for baby not getting enough or supply dropping.

  • Yes, DD was much faster when we ditched the shield (she was 7 weeks old).  I think they can get the milk more efficiently without it.
