Lower back pain/cramps when lying down?

Is this anything to be concerned about. The past two days when I've been lying down reading I've had these pinches or cramps in my lower and middle back and abdomen. Should I not lay on my back?

  • If it's not comfy, I wouldn't.  I had/have this though and I think it's due to my uterus being tilted towards my back.  It's probably just your uterus settling on something when you lie in that position.  You can always mention to your Dr. but it doesn't sound like anything alarming to me.

  • This past Friday I started having bad lower back aches...  Mine got worse when I sat up straight or when I walked.  I ended up calling a nurse and she said to look out for a few things...  If you have severe cramping, spotting or bleeding, or symptoms of a UTI she wanted me to come in.  Since I don't have any of those issues she told me to take it easy.  Recommended taking Tylenol, use a heating pad, take a warm bath... and she said that if it doesn't get better with time that they would refer me to a physical therapist to work on stretches to help with those aches and pains.  I am 11 weeks but remember having a few of those aches and pains at 6 weeks as well.

In general though...if it hurts to lay down on your back, don't lay down on your back!  It's your bodies way of telling you to try something else.

  • we are prone to UTI while we're pregnant, which can sometimes show itself as a lower back-ache...  watch your pee and definitely call your doctor soon if it doesnt go away so that they can check it out :)
