Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone's LO on similac sensitive but still seem gassy?

DD is 3 1/2 weeks old. She's been on similac sensitive for about a week now (previously bf), but still seems very gassy. She will be sound asleep and wake up crying and then fart and then fall back asleep. I give her gas drops in the bottle but nothing seems to work. Do I need to just give her more time to get used to it?

  • We have to give the gas drops before our LO takes his bottle for them to work it seems.  Our pedi also recommended doing that, and we also use Similac sensitive.

  • Our LO is primarily breast fed, but my husband gives him a bottle of this formula at night so I can get some extra sleep.  He's (the baby, that is, not my DH haha) VERY gassy and also wakes himself up to toot all night.  All day too, so I don't necessarily think it is due to the formula.  I've been reading that their digestive systems are still maturing, so I think it is just going to take a little more time.  I read around 3 months things start to improve.

  • My son has been on it for over a month now, he almost 3months. He is still very gassy and moves around until the gas passes. I have wonder the samething is it the formula? I give him gas drops when I hear the sounds in his tummy. I'm going to try to switch bottles first.

I should have mentioned - we use the Dr Browns bottle.  Also, the few times I've stayed up and bf him instead of DH giving him the formula, he's had the same issues.

  • We had my daughter on this for about 2 or 3 weeks and i didnt feel like it made any difference so i ended up switching her to costco brand to save some $$ and she still seems the same on this im thinking she will just kind of grow out of the gas and fussiness..

  • DD has been on the Similac Sensative for over 2 weeks now. She still farts a lot however, her belly doesn't get rock hard and she doesn't scream profusely like she did on the Similac advance.

  • We had to switch to Similac Alimentum at 7 weeks because the sensitive wasn't working.  He's still on it at 19 weeks.  It was a miracle for us to find a formula that worked for him.  He was so miserable.  No allergies, just had an intolerance to the milk proteins, or difficulty digesting them.  From what I know now, it's pretty common.  The Alimentum breaks the proteins down so their immature digestive systems can tolerate the formula.  We had a new happy baby within 2-3 days after him being on it and he was pooping regularly.
  • My pedi recommended we don't switch formula and just give the baby time - she said that their digestive systems are adjusting the first few months and then they will even out.  We make sure we burp every ounce to help reduce gas.  Also, we stir our formula for less air/bubbles in his bottles.

  • When she recommended we switch to Similac Sensitive, our pediatrician said to give it at least two weeks to see any results.  Margo is still gassy, but she screams a lot less than before in an effort to get it out.  We use the gas drops, but add them directly to the bottle before feeding.  Try it out; the drops actually make the bubbles from shaking the bottle to mix it disappear.  We also just started using the Dr. Brown's formula pitcher which doesn't mix as much air into the formula.

Brand name or generic, it doesn't matter.  It's all the same drug, called simethicone.  I use Equate, the generic brand at Walmart.
