How long did it take your LO to get the hang of a sippy?

We tried for a long while to get Ds to take a bottle with no success. So we took a break and decided to go straight to the sippy. I introduced it at 6 months, now at 7 months he still doesn't get it. How long did it take your Lo to "get" the sippy? He just chews it and doesn't underdstand how to suck to get liquid out.  Help!

  • Honestly, my baby does better with an open cup. Although I tried a different sippy that the water comes out of faster, and I think he liked that (sorry, it was a cheapy Canadian brand from Superstore).

Have you taken the valve out so water will just flow if it's tipped up?

  • My son took bottles fine, but he never got the hang of a sipply.  We use a straw cup now, and it works great.  I'd heard that some babies never really understand the sippy, but it always seemed to me that a straw cup was more advanced.  Well, my son took to it, and that's what we use now.  You can get a cheap one for $2 at Walmart, if you want to try it.  It'll probably be a bit of trial and error on this one.  Good luck!

  • I would buy a straw cup to see if he can figure that one out and I would also get a cheap sippy that just lets the liquid come out if it's tipped (no sucking required).
