Block Feeding Confusion

I've been block feeding, but don't think I'm understanding it correctly.

Lets say I have the following schedule everyday

12-3 Left side

3-6 Right side

6-9 Left side

9-12 Right side

12-3 Left side

What do I do if DS sleeps through the 3-6 and 9-12 (right side) blocks? Would I still put him on the left side at the 12-3 feeding? This  doesn't seem right to me, but I'm not sure how to factor in the times he's asleep. Any help is appreciated! :)

Re: Block Feeding Confusion

  • I am assuming you are feeding on demand??? If so then if he is asleep or skips a feeding and you are feeling engorged then I would start again on the skipped side feeding but only for a few minutes and then switch to the other side for the majority of the feed. Your body will adjust quickly, especially if you are feeding on demand and baby is nursing all over the map.

  • I wouldn't go by the clock, I would go by feedings. Two or three feedings in a row on one side, then two or three feedings on the other. Then you don't have to worry about a scenario like that. Just keep track of what side you're on for any given feeding.

I was thinking about that, but his feedings are not consistent. Sometimes he'll eat for 20 min and be good for 3 hours and other times he'll eat on and off for 2 hours straight. I guess I should just have him eat until the one side is really drained and then switch to the other side?

THIS...I block feed and basically stick with one boob till its squishy soft!  Usually its two or three feedings but if hes eating on and off for an hour or so which is often, then sometimes its four or five times at one boob.  He usually only nurses for five to ten min since i have a forceful letdown and flow
