Pre-k and still doesn't recognize her name!

I am frustrated and not sure if I should be worried. DD only knows a handful of letters, can only write 3 of them, and this past weekend didn't recognize her name written out.

I try to work with her but she's just not interested. Her teacher says she is behind but not to worry.

  • Don't stress about it. She'll be fine.

  • She just turned 4 a couple months ago? Don't stress it, a LOT changes in just one year. Jake didn't know many letters, if any, at beg. of age 4 but now be will be 5 in April and knows all his letters, numbers, and can write all his letters plus spell his name on his own. I work with him about once a day for 15ish minutes (since xmas) and its amazing how fast he gets it.
  • My son is a little older.  He can spell his name out loud and he can type his name on the computer/leap pad but he cannot write all the letters in the correct order.  I am not too worried has he still has one more year of preschool.   He isn't the kid to want to practice on his own (like DD who wrote her name before age 4), it has to be when he wants to do--and you have to jump on the opportunity he gives!

  • Did the teacher explain why she isn't worried? Maybe you'd be more at ease if she outlined the ways in which your daughter was developing pre-literacy skills.
  • Since she's 4 and 2 mos, I wouldn't worry just yet.  Sometimes it take a little time for this stuff to click.  Generally, sometime around 4 y/o it does click.  As with everything, for some it clicks a little earlier and some a little later.  Is she really good at something else?  If so, it's possible that is what she's interested in now (maybe numbers, colors, shapes, etc.) and once she has mastered that she'll be ready to move onto letters.  FWIW, I love the LeapFrog Letter Factory DVDs as a fun way to play with letters and their sounds.  they're all available on Netflix if you have that streaming.

  • Are you sure she doesn't recognize it? If she's not interested in reading, she might just be saying, "I don't know" to try to get out of doing stuff like that. When my son is disinterested in something, he regularly tells me he doesn't know how to do it, even when I know he's not telling the truth.
She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I would just relax - learning takes longer for some kids and you may be surprised when all of a sudden, she wakes up one day and knows a lot more than she does today.  My DD started PreK when she was a few months past her 4th birthday and compared to some of the kids, she was way behind her peers.  We held her back a year (for other reasons) and she started PreK this year at about the same place she had been last year with some minor advancements.  This year, she has totally taken off and is caught up to her peers in what she knows.  She has ADHD and a speech delay and was behind but now that she is being treated for the ADHD, she is just learning and learning and learning.  I have seen other kids in her class just take off as well this year - the kids all sign in every morning and when you look at those names on day 1 compared to now, for most, there is a huge difference but not for all.  Kids all learn at a different pace.
