Breastfeeding

Gas or Hunger?

Good night everyone,

I am trying to switch LO from supplementing to EBF. So this weekend I tried to nurse LO as much as possible  and DH just gave her 2 oz of formula on Sunday because I had to run some errands. So today I nursed her only. I tried to keep her at the breast as much as possible to increase my milk supply. So since I was trying to get her off formula, the two days she not had a bowel movement. After I nurse her I try burping her and it takes a longer time to get a burp out of her, today she hardly burped after many tries. I do notice her passing gas more often and when she does she cries a little and stops. So does she sound like shes constipated? Do I need to get her the gas drops? or she reacting this way because Im giving her less formula. Do you think shes not getting enough breast milk and thats giving her gas?

So I felt so bad and DH just gave her 3.5 oz of formula which she finished in 10 minutes and he was able to burp her after. Do you think she wasn't getting much breast milk throughout the day thats why shes so gassy?

Re: Gas or Hunger?

  • It could all be her body adjusting to the switch. Were you breastfeeding at all before or pumping? I think keeping her on the boob is the way to go. It could be that she is sensitive to something in your milk but I would wait until she is eating regularly at the boob to make any diet changes. I wouldn't worry about the no pooping thing, that's pretty common. As long as she is having enough wet diapers then you know she is taking in enough milk. She is used to the bottle and more efficient at it so she will not have to work as hard at it and take more food. Keep on the breast and things should start to level out! Good luck and congrats on switching to ebf!!

  • My EBF baby poos only once every few days sometimes.  It's normal for them to go several days.  BM is digested very well by babies' systems so their bodies use it well, so there's less poo.  I would not be worried about the lack of dirty diapers at all!  It's normal to go up to 10 days.

And for the burping....  Bottles have air in them, which babies take in while eating.  There is no air in your boob.  :-)  I rarely burp my LO after nursing, but always after a bottle.  Still pat her back to encourage any bubbles to come up, but don't worry if you don't get a burp.

  • Thanks for your advice everyone!

I wanted to add some updates. LO pooped last night, I never thought I would be so happy seeing poop.  She slept for 6 and half hours last night. This morning i woke up and BF her.
