Help Me!!

I am having a bit of a challenge breastfeeding my newborn. He is  3 days old and latches on pretty well but that is where the success stops. My milk is just starting to come in so I thought things would improve. The biggest obstacle is my nipples are too flat. The nurse suggested a nipple shield which I have been trying. The problem is the nipple is so long and and my little guys suction isn't that strong. He was born at 35 weeks and 3 days so he's not full term. I have tried different sizes but all are too long.  He takes my pumped milk from a bottle w/ a little difficulty and I have to supplement w/ formula also. Any suggestions? Unfortunately the hospital where I had a cs doesn't have lactation consultants anymore and the nurses weren't alot of help. I have been so frustrated and feel like a bad mom b/c I can't feed my baby properly.Sad

Re: Help Me!!

  • Don't get discouraged, your doing all the right things. Keep trying and eventually you guys will get it.  There are a ton of websites out there for breastfeeding moms with questions:) www.kellymom.com has a ton of info. I struggled with my daughter for the first couple weeks, but we are finally getting into a really good rythm together. Just don't give up, and keep doing what your doing.

  • Call your local LaLeche League contact!  They'll know what resources are available to you locally.  I've also heard of some LLL contacts going as far as to come out to your place to help establish things at home.

  • You should also try to find an IBCLC consultant outside of your hospital or the la leche league. Good luck, those first few weeks are tough but hang in there!!
