Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

kinda gross... passed a huge clot after d&c

Anyone have this experience? Four days ago I had a d&c. This was after I still hadn't passed the sacs after nearly a month of waiting out an incomplete miscarriage.

I've spend the weekend recovering and the bleeding was getting lighter. Today was the first day I didn't take any ibuprofren and felt somewhat okay. But around four o'clock, I got really severe cramping which did not go away with three ibuprofren (I know, I know, but I figured I hadn't taken any all day so I'm technically not going over the limit). I was cramping for about two hours, when it subsided a bit.... but I felt like maybe I was bleeding a bit more than usual and went to the bathroom to check. WELL... as I was sitting there I passed a huge clot... or piece of tissue... or someting. Seriously it was the size of my palm, almost as big as the two I'd passed back in December when the bleeding started. Needless to say I was a bit freaked out.

Funny thing is, the cramping immediately stopped. Is this normal? Did they miss something?  I was told to call if I bled through a pad an hour, but it was just the one clot and it seems to have stopped, so I"m not sure what to do. No one said anything about possibly having something left behind.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. I didn't have a D&C, but I'd be kind of freaked out, too. I know lots of bleeding is normal after a D&C, but I'd think all of the huge clots would have been removed. I think you should call your doctor, just in case it means they missed something. It may be completely normal, but I think you'll feel better if you call.

  • I had this happen like 4 nights in a row about 3 days after my d&c, although my clots were more like 2 golf ball sized. I called my dr and she said I needed to rest more, and I was taking vicodin for pain. Then it didn't happen for almost a week, and then yesterday it happened again yesterday, but the clot was super small, like dime sized. I go in for my follow up tomorrow, I'm interested to see what she says about it but did not sound concerned about it over the phone. I'm a big proponent of calling and just letting them know what's going on, it never hurts.

  • Thanks for the responses. I did call, and I'm waiting for the dr on call to get back to me now. I wish they had told me about this as a possibility though, so I wouldn't have been so surprised.

I wish they had given me something stronger for the pain, honestly. My dr. just said to take either tylenol or ibuprofren. Tylenol does nothing for me and the ibuprofren takes the edge off, but doesn't really take the pain completely away.

  • Sorry you're going through this. The clots were a scathe surprise to me too. Wow, I got VIC.Odin and VA.LIUM to help me sleep. The cramps basically feel like laborious so I'm glad they gave me something. I had to breathe through some of them. I hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm sorry you had to go through that - how upsetting!  I haven't really had any clots, but I also wasn't as far along as you.  Hope that you feel physically better soon, and that there are no more scary surprises.

  • Hey there,

I had something very similar happen to me too! I had a D&C on Jan 14th/12. 3 days later I started having very painful cramps, they came every 7-10 minutes. I felt like I was having contractions! No pain medication worked and I felt like I was going through hell. The next day I passed a huge piece of tissue too. I saw my doctor later that week and he was really surprised that I passed any tissue. But he said sometimes the uterus is still shedding.

I had light bleeding ever since but started bleeding a little more today. Looking forward to the bleeding to stop!

     Hope your feeling better.

  • I was pretty scared when this happened to me after my D&C (12/29/11).  I had the light bleeding for about 3-4 days after my D&C, then all of a sudden, BAM!  Cramps that made it difficult to even sit up.

My biggest clot was a little bigger than a golf ball.  This happened for about 2-3 days.  My doctor said that she couldn't get as much tissue out as she would have liked b/c my cervix just wouldn't dilate enough for her to use the larger instrument.  She also said that I had a large amount of tissue (mc found at 11w4d), so combined w/my cervix not opening as wide, I had to pass the remainder of the tissue on my own.  Fortunately, I had my two week f/u with my OB two days after most of the clots had passed.

I am now two straight days without any bleeding or spotting.  Now it's just time to wait for AF to show her face.  If you are concerned about how your are healing, trust your gut & call your doctor.  It's better to be a pain in the a$s @ the doctor's office, then the sit around & risk something bad happening.

  • I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.  I had a D&C also and at my 2-week follow up, saw that I had about 6 big clots still in my uterus.  No tissue, but blood that hadn't been expelled before my cervix closed.

I took cytotec over the weekend, passed the clots and everything looked good yesterday.  I hope you're through the physical part so the emotional part can be your focus.  ((hugs))

  • Thanks everyone for your answers. My doctor didn't seem too worried since I'm not bleeding much aside from that - and so far - no more big clots.

But seriously, now I'm just annoyed they didn't tell me this might happen beforehand. It's scary! I mean they tell you "light bleeding like the end of your period" and "light cramping" neither of which even began to describe what was going on. I go in for my follow up Thursday so hopefully there won't be any more nasty surprises. I am so ready for the physical stuff to be over already.

  • Seems like the bleeding is different for everyone and clots as well I bleed 4 weeks after Dandc and the had 3 good days I was so happy thinking its over then a really heavy day so I figured my period was starting then the next day nothing...very frustrating not to know what to expect from day to day.
