Would you say "no" to a name solely because of popularity?

Re: Would you say "no" to a name solely because of popularity?

  • I wouldn't avoid a name I love if it's popular unless I personally know a lot of kids with that name.  My daughter's name (Julia) was ranked 8 in our state the year she was born (didn't realize this at the time), but as it turns out we haven't run into other Julias in her school, ballet, soccer, neighborhood, etc.  On the other hand, I know three Elianas.  Also, as others mentioned "popular" names today aren't the same as Jennifer in the late 70's/early 80's.  Check by your state.  In MA there were something like 500 Isabellas born in 2010.  There were 1500 Jennifers in 1979.  That's a big difference in popularity.  Then again, I kind of envied kids who had a more common name.  It's like they were part of a club I couldn't join or something.  I never knew anyone with my name, so the grass is always greener I guess!

  • I realize Jackson may not completely fit my criteria (and it may not fit the classic transcending thing, but a lot of names on the top whatever lists do so that point wasn't necessary connected to Jackson just popularlity in general), but my husband won't go with just "Jack" because we have a one syllable very common last name and he does not like flow of Jack ____ as his formal name. He can live with Jack as a nn if that's what he ends up being called and I can live with Jackson as a first name, knowing we both have the option of calling him Jack or Jackson.  We had the worst time coming up with a name - literally, we have complete opposite tastes in names -  and did not agree or come close to agreeing on one name until Jackson came up, and then it just clicked for us. I get it's one of those names people usually love or loathe (I have plenty of those myself), but as long as we feel good about the name and it's not a name that is going to screw our kid up for life (at least my husband and I both agreed on no you-neek names), we're happy with our choice.

  • If I know someone who used it, I would probably cross it off. DS is named after my Grandfather so it didn't matter how popular the name (#4 in our state).

  • Yes.

I have loved the name Isabelle for probably 20 years, and knew that if I ever had a little girl, that would be her name. I could just sense it. Never really had a strong feeling about a boys name, but Isabelle for a girl.

Now, with the popularity of the name first because of Grey's Anatomy and more recently because of the Twilight series, it's a no-go. Makes me so sad, but I'd say about 50% of the baby girls born to friends and acquaintances have been named Isabelle in the past five years. It's quite ridiculous, really. Seems like the others are Sophie/Sophia/Sadie/Olivia.

We are team green, and have no names picked out, at all. I just started stressing about this today. What if we have the baby and still can't come up with anything (we're not debating names, just have no good ideas for baby names).

  • No I love the name Ella and have for many years.  Even though it is up in popularity I still have it on my list.

  • We have decided to name our DD Harper.  I have loved this name for years (before it was as popular as it is now).  I kept second guessing myself because it is becoming more popular.  However, we kept going back to it.  I realized that I should just stick with what I love.  Who knows...just because it is popular some places, doesn't mean that it will be where I live (I don't know any kiddos IRL with the name).  My DH felt the same way about Jackson...however, my cousin has a LO with that name, so it was out for me.

So, IMO...Go with what you love.  If you don't, you may wish that you would have.  :)  GL!
