Any tips on getting sharpie marker off

Abby got into my sharpie markers while I was showering and colored her hands and feet. I trird soap but it didn't do much. I'm just thankful she didn't get any on the carpet and only a little on her pj's. Any one got any ideas how to get it off her skin.

Re: Any tips on getting sharpie marker off

  • I can't remember if it was sharpie (probably not), but taking a long bath has helped with a lot of stuff on my kids (like getting their hands painted with that terrible face paint that doesn't come off, etc).  Maybe try that.  I know my kids don't like me scrubbing them too much, so at least a bath would probably help.

  • On myself, I think I have used a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, but I don't know that you really want to slather her in that stuff. It always used to work when you'd get those 'X's on your hands at a bar or whatever.

  • Hand Sanitizer:) Might have to use it with a old tooth brush but it works pretty good. It's the alcohol in the sanitizer that does it I think.

  • I was also going to say hand sanitizer.  But I would scrub it with a toothbrush, that stuff burns irritated skin.  I would probably put her in the tub, slobber the skin with lotion to moisturize it, wipe it all off then gently rub with hand sanitizer.  Then bath her with good old soap and water.  Reapply lotion.

She wouldn't be the first kid to live a week with sharpied hands and feet.  I have to keep the kids separated and one contained in the master while I shower, and do it FAST!  I have mastered the 6 minute shower!

  • Thanks everyone. I tried googling and all I found was using alcohol which I'm not sure I want to use on her skin.  Of course I don't have hand sanitizer.  All else fails she will go to school tomorrow with a greenish blue hand and colors on her feet.

TinyPinkBug: thanks for the link.  I will try some of those tricks.   Never thought about using toothpaste or sunscreen.

I had forgotten about sunscreen myself.  I learned the hard way that sunscreen has emulsifiers that act as dissolving agents while on my Honeymoon.  My acrylic nails got tacky and turned green!  Yuck.  And of course I couldn't find a nail salon in Aruba.
