Baby Names

Cobain?

I love the name Coby but I really want a 'formal' name to go with it, nickname Coby. I don't have any problems with the singer Cobain but I'm not like an uber fan. I just like the name. I don't want him to always be associated with it and I wonder how long Cobain will instantly bring to mind Kurt Cobain? Such as Marley isn't always immediately linked with Bob Marley. It flows well with our last name. We've pushed it aside over and over again because of the issues I've mentioned but we always come back to it. We don't like any boy name more. Feel free to post your thoughts and opinions. Be honest but not rude, please. Thanks![Poll]

Re: Cobain?

  • PLEASE DON'T.  There is no other association other than the singer.

  • i said go for it, your intuition is telling you to keep going back to it.  Also, the name will probably always be associated with Kurt Cobain, so if you aren't willing to accept that, then its probably a good idea to move on.

what about Corbin?  then maybe coby would still work as a nn?

  • That is horrendous. Your child will be associated with Kurt Cobain and Cocain. Please don't.

    Could you do Colby?

  • Cobain is awful. There is no other association with it other than the singer, and cocaine (which is also an association with a singer). Not something you want to saddle a child with.

What about Jacob, nn Coby? Or Colby? Even Coby is okay, I think.

Edit: Don't know why this posted twice. I wanted to add that the difference between Marley and Cobain is that Marley is a legitimate name in its own right that was in use before Bob Marley was famous. Not so with Cobain.

  • Cobain will ALWAYS instantly bring to mind Kurt Cobain. And even if you were an uber fan, I think it is a bad choice given his horrific suicide.
  • I think Cobain will always immediately bring Kurt to mind (just as Marley always brings Bob to mind.)

FYI: Kurt did not overdose on cocaine (he shot himself with a shotgun) and they found heroin in his system, not cocaine.

  • I've never even listened to a single song by him and know of very few musical celebrities but all I can think of is Kurt Cobain.

Coby is NMS but Cobain is just awful.  Just use Coby if you can't get past it.  I do like the pp's suggestion of Jacob.

  • I would consider, in addition to just plain Coby, names like Colbert, Colin (maybe with a B middle name like Bruce), or Coburn. I think -bert and -burn names are starting to come back now that there is some backlash to the trendy alternate spelling names and people are choosing more formal names instead.

ETA: I think PP's suggestion Jacob would work well, too.

  • It's definitely different and while I thought of the singer - both of my parents are here who are hip and with it and I asked them and they looked at me like I was nuts. It's our generation mostly that would make the connection. The child's generation will not make the association of a dead singer from long before their time.
  • Sorry, I'm with the others who insist Kurt Cobain will always be the association and the assumption that that is who you named him after. I disagree that people will not get the association after a while... Nirvana is really sticking out as quite significant in the music industry (as a change in rock music) as time goes by.

I also dislike it as a name - it just isn't one.

I chose go with Coby only because if that's what you and H keep returning to, then use it... it's better than Cobain.

I like some other suggestions though - Jacoby, Colby etc.

    Good luck!

  • My first thought upon seeing the title of this post was "Like Kurt Cobain?" and I'm guessing that will be the thought of a lot of people who met a child named Cobain.

Coby is better than Cobain; at least it doesn't have this inescapable connotation.

  • I still don't think that it was suicide.

Oh, and Corbin and Jacob are better choices for Coby.

  • I LOVE Kurt so I have no issues with Cobain but everyone will assume you're huge fans.  I don't ever see this name crossing over like Marley or Jagger.

I think the reference to cocaine is that it rhymes with Cobain - not that they were suggesting he died of a drug overdose. Most people of our generation know how he died. Although he was known to be a heavy drug user which played significantly into his decision to kill himself.

This. It's going to be this association for a LONG time.

  • Thank you all for your input and suggestions. I really needed to hear the negative feedback I was feeling come from others! Hopefully this will help us move on. I'll mention all the suggestions to my SO. Thanks!

  • I think it would be an odd name, but I don't think the association with Kurt Cobain. For a lot of my generation he was our hope that the world could change. And most actual fans, don't even think of the drugs (but that did go hand in hand with the grunge movement/counter culture). I would love to name my child something that made me think of Kurt Cobain but neither name is my style.

Ah, I didn't get that the reference was because it rhymes with cocaine- thanks.

And you are definitely right, by all reports, he was a very heavy drug user - such a shame to have had to add him to the list of dead at 27. :-(

I'd love the hear the theory too!

  • Lots of us die-hard fans will never believe he killed himself. There are plenty of theories and even a compelling documentary about it. A few important things don't add up - like the writing variations in the suicide note, and the amount of drugs in his system would've made it hard to be conscious enough to shoot himself. If you're interested, google it. OP if you really like the name then go with it.
