XP: Stacking Mattresses?

We are in an odd situation... and we're a little crazy.  We plan to keep doing emergency placements until at least May--when we have a better idea whether or not we might be taking Pumpkin's sisters.  I don't want to buy a second crib that we may only use for a few months.

(*It's time to start transitioning Pumpkin from his bassinet to his crib. We still have the pack 'n play--in our county, kids can sleep in the pnp for a looong time)

We have the Graco Sarah crib--that converts to a toddler bed.  The side comes on and off very easily, but I don't think the bed was made to be raised and lowered repeatedly. (lock-tite on the screws and it was difficult to do...)

A good friend gave us a second mattress--nearly brand new, and fits the crib well. I was thinking of stacking one mattress on top of the other to raise and lower the height of the bed easily. (like a box-spring and mattress--but two mattresses)

I've been trying to think of safety drawbacks and can't think of why this would be bad.  Help a tired mom troubleshoot!

*I am looking on craigslist for a "back-up" toddler bed to keep in the basement.  Oh, I could open a daycare in the basement.

  • I would be hesitant to do this. If you are worried about picking the baby up (before s/he can stand or sit to make it easier), maybe just get a really sturdy step-stool to put next to the crib. My mom is 4'11" and is very nearly married to her stepstool ;)

  • A stepstool is a good idea!

We may just buy a second crib or toddler bed anyway, and have this one be just for Punkin.
