Stacking mattresses???

We are in an odd situation, and I would love some feedback.

We currently have a 3 mo. old baby--long term foster care placement.  We also do emergency care placements. So, we could have a three year old for one week, then a one year old for a few days....

We have the Graco Sarah crib--that converts to a toddler bed.  The side comes on and off very easily, but I don't think the bed was made to be raised and lowered repeatedly. (lock-tite on the screws and it was difficult to do...)

A good friend gave us a second mattress--nearly brand new, and fits the crib well. I was thinking of stacking one mattress on top of the other to raise the height of the bed easily. (like a box-spring and mattress--but two mattresses)  I've been trying to think of safety drawbacks and can't think of why this would be bad.  Help a tired mom troubleshoot!

Re: Stacking mattresses???

  • I would be concerned that it would make the mattress too soft and become a safety hazard for an infant, which is supposed to have a firm mattress.

  • I don't see how it would make it too soft, especially if both mattresses are firm. But I still don't think I'd do it.
  • No.  Don't do it.

  • if the firmness is the concern, could you get a piece of wood cut to the size of the crib at Home Depot and put between the two mattresses?  I know people do this for under the mattress when using an angelcare motion monitor so I don't think the wood itself is a hazard.

i guess I'm not seeing any other reason this would be a bad idea but I'm no expert.  if the mattresses both fit snugly in the crib, whats the concern?
