What do you think of the name Rilla?

I discovered this name in the Anne of Green Gables series (Rilla is the nickname of Anne's youngest daughter) and I really like it. I like that it is a little unusual, but still easy to pronounce and to spell. My main concern about it is that it could easily turn into not-so-nice nicknames like Rilla Gorilla. What do you think?

Re: What do you think of the name Rilla?

  • IMHO I don't really care for it. Sounds too nick-namey for me. Sorry!

  • My gut instinct was to reply "rilla dumb".

NMS as a name, as a NN it would be fine though.

  • hmmmm.... I've never heard this name before. I think it has potential. Though, now I can't get the 'gorilla' thing out of my head...

    sorry I'm not more helpful!

  • Are you sure it isn't a nickname for Marilla? That's the name of the woman who adopted her.

I like Marilla, nn Rilla. I don't like Rilla as a fn. it seems incomplete.

  • Ew, I think it's awful. Usually I can find an upside to unique names but with this name I just cringe! It reminds me of "Villa" and "ill"

I think the kid would rilla get made fun of.

  • I can't see that name and not think gorilla, sorry!

If I saw it on a roster or something I would probably pronounce it "ri-ya" under the presumption that it must be a name from another language and the "ll" in Spanish becomes the "y" sound (like tortilla)

  • I don't like it...it reminds me of one of the names of a member of the Wu-Tang Clan.
  • When I saw the title the first thing I thought was, "Ooh, that's Anne Shirley's youngest daughter's name!" Her full name is Marilla, but they called her Rilla. I think it's kinda cute but I don't like Marilla, and I don't think Rilla stands well on its own as a name.

  • Sorry, really don't like it. It doesn't sound pretty to me, it sounds completely made up  - could be a NN, but definitely NOT a FN.

It's meh. It sounds like a nn to me, too, but not sure what it would be a nn for.

    Sasparilla? lol

    exactly what I thought too!

  • Another Anne fan here Big Smile And I really like "Rilla". It does sound like a nickname, but I'd get over it :) My niece's name is Marijke, and she goes by "Rika", so Rilla doesn't seem like a stretch to me.

  • I think it's pretty, and it doesn't make me think of Gorilla. But I agree that it's a great nickname for Marilla, but doesn't sound quite right as a full name. I like Marilla too :)

  • I love it as a nickname for Marilla (but I am also an Anne of Green Gables fan). I think it could make a cute middle name by itself though.
