Went into ER and got diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. I and my whole family are joking about it right now. I feel like a complete freak, but I just have to laugh.
My family would be the same way. We tease each other constantly. It is really a horrible thing to go through, but it is temporary and it goes away. It's something you can choose to sit around and cry about or you can try to find some humor in it and know that it could be worse. If she was devastated and her family made fun of her, that would be different, but she is taking it well.
I had this once in my early 20s. It was actually bad because the week's leading up to my left side of my face "falling" i was having super bad headaches that were nearly unbearable.
And then my eye couldn't close. Ugh I actually hated it.
Bahahahaa! I too had this once and it IS funny. My mom had a spaghetti dinner in my honor. All you can do is laugh about it. Although, i will tell you, I didn't take the steroids and valtrex prescriptions; instead I took Emergen-C packets, Vitamin D and Vitamin B-12 (three times a day, with a lot of laughs). Also, the eye gel for night time works like a charm. It went away within a few weeks. When ever I feel a little stressed or tipsy, I feel like I might get the Bells Palsy again...it's become a running joke with all of my family and friends. Good luck, girl! Keep on half smiling
I had this a couple years ago. At first it was extremely scary because I didn't know how long it was going to last, but after some research, medication, and reassurance from my doctor, I calmed down. Mine only lasted a few weeks.
I, too, come from families (mine and in-laws) who joke about everything. Honestly, the joking and teasing, all in love, made it easier to cope with. I knew that they loved me and would support me no matter what I looked like - even if I had to pass on taco night! LOL!
Sleeping with a cool washrag over the "droopy" eye helps a lot! It keeps it moist and dark. Also, carry a straw with you wherever you go. I had a one year old at home when I got BP and all I can say is that even though she knew something was different about me, she loved me uncondtionally and was still Mommy's Little Girl...that made all the difference in the world. Good luck!

On our way home (my mom drove me to the er), she ran a red light, and we had just picked up eye drops and a patch for me to sleep with, and I said "Mom! I only have one properly functioning eye right now... Why are you the one running red lights?" We both got a laugh out of it. I also walked into the house wearing my new eye patch. Luckily so far while my right eye won't close all the way, it still closes most of the way if I concentrate on it, so right now it's just weakness and not paralysis. Mine was diagnosed pregnancy related..... AHHHH, the things we do for our kids right?
Sorry to hear that you have to go through this. but glad you have a sense of humor about it. My husband had it last year and although it was pretty much undetectable to everyone but us after about 6 weeks, he still had some lingering paralysis for a couple more months. Drove him crazy. He took a week off of work when it first happened and then realized that he had to go back. I wish he could have had the sense of humor that you do.
Oh and I second the straw and the moist washcloths. Not being able to drink properly and having his eye dry out all the time were his two biggest complaints.
Forgive me for lurking. My mom had this 2 years ago. I know that her chiropractor was able to do a lot to help her clear it up/make her more comfy with face massage. (She also took the meds.) Maybe something to look into. HTH!

OP...I hope it goes away quickly!!
