anyone elected not to do 1 hour glucose test?

for any reason?  i am supposed to do this this week and im terrified that chugging the sugary drink in such little time will trigger a gallbladder attack.  (....for those that dont know i went to the ER for bad abdominal pain a few weeks ago bc i guess i have gallstones and was having an attack).  - the triggers are different for everyone.  there isnt just one dietary plan to follow when it comes to managing this.  i plan to talk to my MFM about this this week but i wanted to know if anyone else chose not to do this or wasnt able to...

Re: anyone elected not to do 1 hour glucose test?

  • If I were you, then, I'd probably talk to them about jumping right to the 2 or 3 hr test.  It's very important to do a glucose test, esp in a multiples pregnancy, but the 1hr isn't as accurate at diagnosing (I think, esp in multiples).

So if you might have a reaction, I'd rather have one while undergoing a definitive test and not an inaccurate one.  There might also be another way to test besides the drink??

  • I would definitely not ignore the glucose. I would work with your provider to see what options you have. Perhaps the 3 hour instead? Or a week of blood sugar monitoring using a monitor and test strips?

GD is nothing to fool around with, so I would explore the options.

  • i wouldnt have a problem with the week of blood sugar monitoring.  the MFM i talked to a couple weeks ago suggested this but was like "i wouldnt do this unless you absolutely have to".  what is the big deal about it?  it didnt sound that bad.

i think the 3 hour test would be hard bc isnt that back and forth monitoring all day with the nurses?  that tactic wouldnt be work bc i have my son and i dont have anyone to watch him and i prefer not to drag him back and forth to the doctor's office all day - if that's what it is.  i dont know much about the 3 hour test.

  • If it's like the 2hr, no, you don't go back and forth.  You stay at the doctor's for 3 hrs and they draw your blood every hour.  It really isn't that bad.

The reason, probably, they don't want to do the week of monitoring unless necessary is because it's a LOT of numbers to keep track of and still isn't diagnostic.  My understanding is the 2 or 3 hrs glucose test is similar to what they use to test for "real" diabetes in non-pregnant patients, too -- so it's proven.

I had the 2hr one done and it wasn't bad at all.  If you bring toys and prepare, your son should be fine with you in the waiting room.  Bring him out for a big breakfast after b/c you'll be wanting to eat, too!! :)

  • Also, you DO know that GD has serious effects on the fetus, as well -- that this isn't "just" a mother thing, right?

um, YEAH i do.  but thanks.

and i didnt say that i was just going to skip it all together.  as i mentioned im discussing it with my MFM this week.  i simply asked if anyone else had skipped the 1 hour test for some reason, and was interested in learning more about their experiences in doing so (reasons why, what they did as a substitute, etc)

that seems like a much better option. thanks for explaining that.

  • FYI...if a doctor tries to force you into the standard glucose testing (ie. The sugary drink) and indicates that is your only option they are dead wrong. Gastric bypass patients don't (or at least shouldn't) do the standard testing, because they can't tolerate it. My doctor tried to force me into the standard testing and I refused it. He worked with my bypass surgeon to work out an alternate plan and it worked out great. We just did a fasting blood sugar and then I went and ate a meal I knew I could tolerate and then we retested 2 hours later. We will repeat that process a couple times throughout my pregnancy. Good luck to you!!
  • Not sure if it would cause an issue with your gallbladder. I had mine out in 2009 and sugary stuff didn't bother me it was more high fat stuff. I still have issues even with my gallbladder removed (IBS, it's actually called dumping syndrome which just sound gross to me! haha so I deal with similar issues that I did before gallbladder was removed minus the severe pain, it's just milder now with the "run to the bathroom stuff"). I had no issues taking the test. You could take the three hour (they take a fasting, and blood three more times once an hour, you stay there.) If you cannot I think they would give you a tester to monitor (some girl on my April board couldn't stomach the drink without throwing up). She did the 4 times a day stick just like I do with the dx of GD.

yeah, the thing is, ive noticed that the triggers are different for everyone. ...for example, i have a hard time drinking orange juice.  but i can have a piece of chocolate, and be okay.  and i dont seem to have a problem with coffee, which i read is a pretty common trigger.  im just nervous that's all...i mean i might not have a problem with it.  i just dont want to risk it....and i think when i passed out in my car a few weeks ago, it had more to do with my gall issues rather than the anemia.  ugh!

  • I had to have the glucose tests done two or three times when I was pregnant with my twins. I passed all of them (they were just the sugary drink ones) but I had to do them because my dads side pretty much everyone has diabetes. Not to mention when I had my 1st son he was 9pounds 13oz and I passed the two tests they gave me. They kept saying because he was so big that I "had to have had" GD. Um no..I just have big kids. Stick out tongue

With that being said as far as your oldest goes, my son was 2.5 when I had my twins so every single appt I went to I just brought our DVD player with us and he watched Pooh Bear or Mickey Mouse. (the short 30 min movies). He just sat in his stroller content as can be. Smile  There was a few times the Dr forgot that my son was with me because he didnt make a sound.  I'm not sure if you have a portable DVD player but thats something you can look into.

Good luck!! I hope everything works out for you and you can figure out a test that will help you :)
