We have four bedrooms...and they're kind of grouped "two and two". We have a bridge that goes across our upstairs that overlooks the great room, so there are two rooms right when you come up the stairs (with a bathroom there too) and then you turn and walk across the bridge to get to our bedroom and the fourth bedroom.
We *think* we want the nursery to be one of the rooms that's next to the bathroom when you first come up the stairs. It's the biggest of the extra bedrooms, it has a very cool bay window in it, and I always pictured it a nursery. But now we're second guessing, wondering if it'd be better to have it in the bedroom that's next to ours and obviously closer.
So I'm just curious...where is your baby's nursery with respect to your bedroom? Or...if you had more than one room as a choice, how did you pick the room that would be the nursery?

We live in a ranch and our master bedroom is in the back of the house and the other two bedrooms are in the front. This is a huge complaint of mine about the house and when we move (hopefully in a couple of years) I will be looking closely at how the rooms are grouped. We put our first DD in the smaller of the two bedrooms because it was the closest to ours, even though that is still not much closer to ours than the other room. When this baby is born, DD will be moving to the other bedroom (it is bigger and she wants to move) and the new baby will be taking over her room.
By the way, I went to U of M too!
We have 3 bedrooms, but we have a split plan (which I love). I like that the nursery is on the other side of the house so that when we eventually go back to work (we will work on opposite days), at least one of us will be able to sleep.

In our case, we only have three bedrooms all grouped together, so it was really just a question of -- the big room or the little room? We opted for the bigger room so there would be play space on the floor too, plus it tends to be the warmest room in the house in winter (old house with no insulation). Decided that the few guests we have stay with us over the course of a year can make do with the little room -- it didn't make sense to save the nicer space for those rare occasions.
I think in your situation I would want the baby on the same side of the bridge you are -- not so much for right now, but once the baby is up and walking, if you end up with one of those escape artist kids that climbs out of their cribs and wanders out of their room in the middle of the night, I'd want the baby's room closer so I had more of a chance to hear it before it decides to try to climb through the railing on the bridge or venture down the stairs. But, I'm paranoid like that (and have nieces/nephews that have pulled off escaping their rooms in spite of their parents' best efforts).

Our rooms are grouped 2 and 2 as well....
Our room and ds's room are the 2 on the left with a guest bedroom and an empty bedroom on the right.
I haven't decided if I will put the baby in the empty room (which is furthest from us), or if I will move baby into ds's room and put him in the further one. My guess is I will move ds to the other room since it is larger and further away.
We certainly never had trouble hearing ds cry at night. We actually ended up turning off the monitor when he was 11 months old because I felt like I could hear him perfect fine through the wall. It was nice just having to go right next door to get ds rather than down the hall.

After 2 1/2 years TTC, 3 IUI's, endo, and a lap, a surprise BFP brought us Alexandra Marie!
We picked the smallest extra room. The other room is a guest bedroom. All of our rooms are off the same short hallway, it is at the other end.
Friends of mine have a similar set up to yours, but the master is on it's own at one end of the bridged hallway. The ended up getting a Summer Infant Video Monitor to watch him when he was napping and at night. He was not moved out of their room until he was a few months old, he slept in the PNP at the foot of their bed.

I feel you on apartment living! It is hard to imagine getting to choose between extra rooms
. I have only slightly more opulent digs as I live in a tiny 2 bedroom apartment. We are now in the process of figuring out where all the stuff in the second bedroom is going to be stored to make room for a baby. In any case noone will ever be more than several steps away from each other.

We also have 4 bedrooms. All are on the seocnd level. The master is to the left of the stairs and the other 3 are to the right of the stairs (with a hall bathroom just at the top of the stairs).
I've always joked that I wanted the nursery to be one of the two rooms at the end of the hall (they are across from each other), furtest from the master, so that if DH was on feeding duty I could still sleep. We've been in the house for about 6 years and have a ton of office furniture in the room closest to ours. Now that I am finally pregnant, DH said he'd move the office furniture if I wanted. But I still do like the idea of the nursery NOT being right next to me! LOL! Plus the office is the smallest room in the house.
Of the two rooms at the end of the hallway, they are about the same size. One is a little bigger with a bigger closet. They have both stayed pretty empty, so not much to move around. I decided to put the nursery in the smaller of these two rooms. We plan to do a gender neutral nursery, and hope hope hope to have a second within 2-3 years of this one. So when/if that happens, we'll move this "baby" into the bigger room and decorate it as a "big girl/boy" room, and give the second baby the nursery.
Like previous posters mentioned, my only concern would be the bridge itself. I wouldn't be too concerned about the baby being down the hall. But depending on the type of railing on the bridge I'd be converned the if as they get older and "get out" that they might stick legs and such through the railing of the bridge. But you can always put up those bumper things on the rails, if that became an issue.
