Re: 27 weeks

  • Congrats on the birth of your son! Welcome to our board-its not a place anyone wants to be but there are amazing women here with lots of support.

My DD is a former 27 weeker. We spent 10 weeks in the NICU and she is almost 11 months old now. She just started crawling this week and is a very healthy baby.

Micropreemies face lots of challenges but they also overcome them with amazing strength. Check out our board's blog (link in siggy) for other mom's preemie stories and other information of preemie life.

I hope your son has an uneventful NICU stay!

  • Congrats on the birth of your son! This board is amazing, I had my twin girls at 35 weeks but they were so tiny that they are in the NICU and 3 weeks old today! Your son will face challenges but he will be perfectly fine in the end I promise!

  • Hello and welcome!  I delivered our DD at 27w6d and it was the hardest, happiest, joyous and depressing time in my life.  I was lucky enough to have the steriod shots to strengthen her lungs and she came out screaming :-) You will find out and be told all the time that every baby is different in how they progress.  You just have to have faith that he will pull through.  Try not to be too doubtful and hard on yourself.  We spent 71 days in the NICU and it was exhausting don't get me wrong...but everyday your son is there is another day he is getting stronger.  We spent 7 weeks just trying to get over the Brady and Desats.  And the last 3 weeks we were working towards getting her to bottle feed and then getting switched from her isolette to an open crib.  Our 27 week miracles are fighters and he will do amazing things and make great strides!  Best of health and luck!

  • My DS was also 27 weeks 0 days and he turned a year on the 19th.  He was on a ventilator, then CPAP and low-flow, had 2 minor surgeries (broviac put in and hernia repairs), spent 80 days in the NICU, and on oxygen for 5 months. Now no one can tell he was premature.  This time last year we were preparing for our 1 lb 15 oz baby to have his first surgery. Today he's so active I have to figure out babyproofing on how to keep him out of the fireplace!  You will get through it, he'll get through it.  Record as much as you can about how much he weighs and what's happening day by day, it'll mean alot when you back to realize how much he's overcome.

  • My twins were born at exactly 27 weeks due to PROM.  They weighed 1lb14oz and 2lb4oz.   They were in the NICU for 68 and 70 days and came home 3 weeks before their due date.  Our NICU stay was uneventful as far as big complications go.  DD was the sicker of the two and had an infection and pneumonia.  They were both on the vent for awhile, followed by days on the siPAP and CPAP.  Like others will tell you, it was a roller coaster of a ride with steps forward then steps backwards.  They both came home on apnea monitors and were on them until they were 6 months actual. I agree with the previous poster about recording as much as you can.  We wrote down every ounce that they gained, how much oxygen they were on, what their feeds were, etc.  It's amazing to look back on that now and see how far they have come!  They will be 7 months old in a few days and are doing great.  They are growing SO big and strong--DD is 15 lbs and DS is 19lbs!  They have no preemie complications other than some tiny PT issues (PT comes out twice a month to work with them). They amaze me every single day.  You will see, these preemie babies are very strong!

  • Congrats and welcome. It's all very overwhelming in the beginning, but I hope you LO does well in the NICU. Like previous posts mention, it is a rollercoaster. My son was born 23w5d, and had a long and challenging NICU stay (147 days). Today, he is almost 19 mos old, and while he's had some delays, he's chugging along at his own pace- walking, beginning to talk, and just a funny happy boy. Preemies are resilient - so don't lose any hope for your LO!

  • Absolutely!  I remember the awful rollercoaster of the NICU and the grief I experienced, thinking I wouldn't have a healthy child anymore.  However, our daughter (born at 26 weeks, 1 lb., 13 oz.) will be two years old in a couple weeks and is doing great.  Even though she had a hard time in the NICU (brain bleeds, heart surgery, etc.) we've seen no long term effects related to prematurity.

The NICU is hard, but just remember to breathe and hold your son as much as they'll allow you and think good thoughts and I promise you'll get through this.  Lots of hugs...

  • Congratulations Mom~ I cant say much more than everyone else already has. This board is full of great moms with lots of support and advice. My DD was born 22 w 5 d - we spent 117 days in the NICU and had a relatively easy stay. Shes 10 months now - and doing fantastic - meeting her adjusted milestones and very healthy! Good luck and keep us updated on you and your lO

  • Congratulations!!

Many 27 weekers go on on to do really well! I had my twins at 27wk5d. My DD did really well. She had all normal preemie issues, but no major problems. She was out of the NICU in 10 weeks. My DS on the other hand has had a much harder time. He has BPD/chronic lung disease and has ended up needing a trach and had some other major complications from his lung issues. He is still in the NICU 5 1/2 months later, but will soon be transferred to a rehab facility where they will get him ready to come home. I am not telling you about my DS to scare you, but to just let you know that despite everything my DS has been through he continues to fight! These little preemies are tough little fighters. Best wishes to your DS!

  • Congratulations!! Of course you have a chance of having a healthy boy but it won't be an easy road :-) My triplets were born at 27 weeks two of them spent 70+ days (I can not even remember now) in the NICU they have no health issues and are in track developmentally. My littlest one was in for 172 days she has a couple issues but will most likely grow out of them. Develoomentally she is a month behind but her road was a longer travel than her sisters.
