Does anyone use Grovia diapers for covers? I am not a fan of the snap in inserts and did not know how they hold up with a prefold or microfiber insert?
I had Grovia at first, they really didn't work well for us for the infant stage. You'd be best going a traditional prefold and cover route instead (the grovia liners were too thick and bunched too much when DD was small). And the crotch felt sort of narrow.
That said, I actually LOVE them now, and choose them first a lot. Since she's bigger they don't bunch, and they are super absorbent for her needs. They are thinner so walking is easier, and I think she can feel when she is wet a little better, which will be good for PTing.
I have Grovia inserts & covers. I bought them used, and I don't love the inserts - they're the old style, without the waterproof backing, and they're starting to fall apart. I do like the covers, though. I use them with some cheap Gerber prefolds while my pockets are in the wash. The only thing I don't like is that the cover smells like ammonia as soon as pee hits it, so my DS smells like pee within an hour. This probably wouldn't be as big an issue if I had some decent PF's or inserts.
I don't think you're supposed to put microfiber up against LO's skin, so a microfiber insert laid in the cover probably wouldn't be a good idea. I sometimes use my GroVia covers with bamboo inserts when we're out & about, since they take up less space in the diaper bag than pockets. I lay the bamboo insert in the cover, then put a fleece liner over the insert to wick away moisture from LO's bum. That works pretty well, but I only have 4 bamboo inserts so I don't do it often.
If you already have the covers and want to use them with inserts or PF's you already have, you definitely can. I wouldn't recommend buying more covers for that use, though. I've never used other brands, but I know there are better covers out there that are less expensive.
I really like using our Grovia covers with inserts and prefolds. The elastic is really stretchy, and I prefer the mesh fabric lining of the Grovia up against DS's skin over the plain old PUL of another cover if I'm using an insert or tri-folding a prefold. I think about what it would feel like to have moist PUL up against my skin and it makes me shudder.
