DS (21 months) has had runny, yellow poop for about a week. It looks like the color of mustard and mayo if you mixed them, and pretty much the consistency of diarrhea. He's had a rash come and go around his mouth (like dry skin), so we figured he's cutting a molar. He threw up last night, but we'd been in the spa and I think he'd gulped too much + the already irritated system = barf. He's actually been better since then, but the poop remains. Never a fever.
Of course the Interwebs tells you that yellow poop means your kid has hepatitis and go to the ER post haste. I think it's more benign that than.
I'm guessing either a mild virus or molars. He has been eschewing food for milk, and that could also be it, but it's just been going on for almost a week.
Anyone else deal w/ prolonged yellow poop? Our doctor is impossible to see same day (the entire health care org) so it's always an UC visit.
Thoughts? Yellow poop commiserations?
Re: Talk to me about toddler yellow poop
I can definitely commiserate! My toddler (I think about the same age as yours - mine's just shy of 23 months) had runny yellow poop last week. No fever, and actually had a pretty normal appetite, but it went on for 4-5 days. He only went 2-3 times a day, which is normal for him, but the color and consistency (and volume - OMG, so many baths and loads of laundry...) were definitely not normal. He was abnormally gassy, too.
On the 4th day, we had a appt with the pedi to check his ears, so I brought it up. He's been on abx so much for his ear infections that I started to freak about c. diff, so we tested for that (that was a fun sample to collect!) but the labs came back fine. The doctor felt his abdomen to make sure it was soft and didn't seem overly concerned. She suggested the BRAT diet, gatorade, soy yogurt and probiotics and withholding dairy. DS loves milk and wanted nothing to do with soy milk, gatorade or even juice. He ended up getting all his fluids from applesauce and smoothies (bananas, soy yogurt, soy milk and some frozen blueberries).
Once I stopped giving milk, he didn't go for a day and a half, then things firmed up after that. Unfortunately, he passed on his bug to the rest of us. It's been a long couple weeks! So... based on what you've described, I wouldn't rush to the doctor unless he gets a fever or starts acting a lot worse. Hope he's feeling better soon and that the rest of you are safe!
Have your kids had rotavirus? It could be that. That is a yellow pasty horrible smelling poop and throw up virus. Once you smell it once you will never forget the smell.
I hope he feels better soon
