How do they determine which you will have? I was scheduled for my 3dt today, and at 8:30 in the car about to make my 1.5 hr ride to the clinic when they called and bumped it to Sunday. I am just curious as to why (and forgot to ask). Is it good, bad?
Last time around I had a 3dt and had a successful cycle so I was just assuming this would be the same.
TIA!
Re: 3dt vs 5dt, difference
Through the last clinic I went to (Cornell in NYC), they do a 5dt if you have (if I remember correctly) 10 or more surviving embryo's. I think the logic is that if you have fewer than 10, they don't want to take a chance on losing more during those last 2 days, so they do a 3dt. But if you have a lot, they want to wait till the 5th day because the odds are better that you'll get PG.
I had four 3dt's. No success. On my last and only 5dt, we finally had success.

3DTs are used when there are only a few embryos and/or the quality of the embryos may be in question, as some RE's believe that the embryo has a better chance of survival inside the uterus than inside the lab.
5DTs are used when there are a lot of embryos or a lot of embryos that are of the same quality. This gives them more time to grade and evaluate what you have - essentially an embryonic survival of the fittest.

Well, we had 19 on day 3 and 2 were transferred and 16 frozen just my clinic's practice...actually I think more are freezing on day 3 now as well based on recent research. I wish they waited until day 5 to freeze because we are in a bit of a quandry over what to do with the remaining embies.

I was kind of shocked because as of Thursday evening we had 5 embies. Thought that was too low to hold out to day 5 but according to the nurse she said that they all really looked good and were holding out for a superstar
Last time when we got to our 3dt we only had 3 and put two back and got DD, the third didn't make it to freeze.

my first clinic only did 5dt's and my first ivf cycle there none made it to day 5....second clinic did a 3dt ....and i am pregnant with two!
if you can get some good blasts on day 5....that's great but a lot of women have success on day 3!
my re explains it like this.... if you get 3 or 4 or 5 embies, chances are good at day3, they look pretty much the same. So they figure, best place to keep them growing is back inside. But if you get 7, 10, etc embies, let them go to blast, because you can really see the difference in a blast, in terms of who is the best embryo.
I did a 3dt and a 5dt, and my 5dt worked. We made a good decision, we out back 3 (the three best) and the remaining 4 arrested before day 5 was over.
For what it is worth, I had 100% viable eggs retrieved, 100% maturity and 100% fert. They tell me that is rare, and that often they are worried about losing embryos on day 4, and if you already lost 25% of what you retrieved, it makes total sense.
