Pedicures...

Tomorrow I am going with a couple of friends to get pedis and then to lunch for some much needed pampering before LO shows up.

Well I've had a couple of pedis this pregnancy and my sister has told me that I can't use the massage chairs while pregnant.

This probably sounds like a stupid question, but is this true? To me it doesn't make any sense, cuz my husband and I give each other massages all the time... I don't see why a massage chair would be any different or cause any problems. She says that it can put you into labor.

Thanks!

Re: Pedicures...

  • Certain pressure points on your feet, neck and shoulders can cause labor, but at this point it shouldn't matter. I had one last week and am thinking of another for today just for the foot massage and chair!

  • You'll be fine.  The person doing the pedi may avoid rubbing your ankles as there's a pressure point there that with repeated pressure can stimulate the uterus but the chair is perfectly ok to use.  If they weren't there would be warning signs on them and nail salons wouldn't allow pg women to use them due to liability issues.

    Enjoy your day of pampering!

  • Just got one last night and I even told them to hit all the "preggo pressure points" in my feet... Still have a bun in the oven lol.

A Massage Therapist friend told me that the pressure points are mostly in your hands and feet and you would have to massage them and hold them basically til it hurts and only if your body is READY to go into labor could it POSSIBLY help. Back massages and massage chairs are fine.

  • I sat in a massage chair at the mall for about 30 minutes when I was 35 weeks. Felt sooo good and I didn't go into labor for another 2 weeks ( I had never heard massage chairs could throw you into labor)

  • I got a pedicure 3 days before I went into labor and the girl tried to tell me I shouldn't use the chair.  I said it was ok because my baby was due in a few days:)  I guess the risk is early labor?  You are far enough along not to worry.
