How long did i take your LO to get to full feedings?

My 35 weeker is just a feeder/grower. We started our bottle feeds today starting at 2 a day. I know everyone is different but just wondering how long it took some of you guys to make it to full feedings?

  • Hi,

My 35 weeker was IUGR, so it took a while for him to build the stamina for full feeds.  All in all, he was in the NICU for 31 days.  We did two feeds for almost three weeks, and then he just took off one day!  We went from barely taking half of his two feeds to finishing all 8 bottles per day within about 9 days!

    GL!!!

  • My oldest daughter was a 34 weeker, and she took about 2 weeks to get to full feedings (which is based on weight, so for her I think it was 30 cc's (1 oz). I remember getting so frustrated, and just wanting her to EAT so we could go home! I know that sounds crazy, but I was emotional, and I wanted that damn tube out! The nurses would try to show me how to get her to eat better (keep her alert, etc.), and that just made it worse (I'm a Nurse Pracitioner, and worked in the nursery, so I took it personal that I couldn't get my own baby to eat!).

My twin daughters were 33 weekers, and they took about 3 weeks to get there (I think 20 cc's). They would have a good day, and then get tired and have a bad day (of course that means tube feedings).

Don't get frustrated if your LO has some set backs...that happens (easy for me to say now...but with all 3, I was frustrated!). Just don't expect too much at once. They just need time!
