Material for Sandwich bags? What is safe?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I want to make some sandwich bags and the blog that I was looking at uses nylon on the inside.  I wanted to find something that might be a little more water proof but safe to be next to the kids food.  I have heard that PLU is not safe, plastic is defeating the purpose and ironed plastic just doesn't seem good either.  One person suggested oil-cloth.  How hard is that to make and to sew with for a beginner?  Any suggestions?

Re: Material for Sandwich bags? What is safe?

  • I don't think oil-cloth is the ideal fabric for what you want to make because one side is plastic and one side is like a cheap flannel. So, you'd still have the plastic problem (if you don't want to use plastic) and then you'd be using the ugly flannel backing as your outer material.

Most ppl I know who've made the reusable bags make it from rip-stop nylon. It's not waterproof, but pretty close to it.

  • Actually, true oil cloth is not made from plastic.  Modern 'oil cloth' is made by fusing vinyl with canvas. Traditional oil cloth used linseed oil, hence the name.
