Wii or Kinect?

What do you have or which does your preschooler prefer?

We are debating on whether or not to get one of them. My parents and MIL both have a Wii and DS loves playing, mostly Wii Sports and Mario Kart. H has an Xbox 360 so we would just need to buy the Kinect thing to go with it.  We played it a couple times at a friend's and DS played it once, but it seemed harder for him to grasp than the Wii. He may have just needed more time to get used to it. But, I liked that the Kinect seems a little more active since you move your whole body and not just the remote.

H and I would be happy with either, and let's not kid ourselves, it's for us too.

Re: Wii or Kinect?

  • We have the Kinect and my kids like it.  My mom has the Wii and they don't like it as much.  They love Kinect Sports and Just Dance for Kids.  Just Dance is a little hard for them to control, but Kinext Sports is super easy for them to control on their own.  Either way, once they're set up, it's easy for them to play the games.  We don't play them a lot, but they're super fun when we have other kids over to play.

  • We have Wii and my four year old loves Mario Kart and the sports games. (as do we) I think your preschooler will pick up whichever gaming system you go with!

  • I'm not a kinect fan at all.  I just don't think it senses movement very well.  You could go to your local GameStop store- I believe they all have demos to try.  Also, look at the wall of games to see how many you'd really be interested in for each.  I feel like Wii has a much better library for kids.

  • Kinect family here!  We love it and it's very active.  DS loves Joy Ride (a driving/racecar game) and sports.  We also have Kinectimals which is okay but rarely his choice.  He loves the adventures game (rafting, obstacle courses) that came with it too.

True, Wii has more games aimed towards kids, but Kinect has been coming out with a LOT lately.  I've seen some kind of muppet/monster one and a disneyland one as well...

I personally think the response time is great...but we are not a very technological family or "gamers" by any means!

  • We have both but prefer the Kinect. The Wii controllers are a little sensitive to motion which can be harder for DS. Heck I even hate it sometimes...but I do LOVE MarioKart. haha

Kinect has some great games for kids and we really like Once Upon a Monster. :)

  • We have both.  We have had the Wii longer, so we are more familiar with it, so DD plays it a bit more often (she LOVES anything Mario). However, we really like the kinect.  DD new favorite game is Kinect's Disneyland.  I like that she isn't as sedentary while playing the kinect.  She seems to have more fun and less frustration, especially since the kinect games we've played so far are zero failure.  If she hits a rock 3x she can still complete the task and not get stuck starting over again and again or demand I help her. 2 y/o DS prefers when we play the kinect because he feels like he is participating even though he can't really control it yet.  There seemed to be more of a learning curve with the kinect, and it can be glitchy at times with sensing movements (especially if an adult is playing with the preschooler), but overall I'm beginning to lean towards the kinect as the better system for our family.

  • We have the Kinnect, parents the Wii. She prefers the Kinnect, it seems easier for her once she figures it out. Loves the Disneyland game and loves Leesmees.

  • My son is obsessed with the Kinect, it's his favorite pass time.  I think it's great but only certain games for certain ages.  He loves the Adventures game that comes with it, Sports season 1 and 2 (Season 1 is more user friendly for a preschooler), and Kinectimals (animals, exploring, what not).  It's great hand eye coordination for him, and on days where it's too cold to go outside it's great to have something to get energy out.

I'm not a fan of the WII, but that's just me.
