TMI: kids and poop?

my kid poops a lot, like five or more times a day. granted, she eats a ton and she rarely complains of a stomach ache, but i'm still weirded out by it. here comes the TMI part: it's usually a lot and more solid in the mornings, then the amount decreases and it gets looser as the day goes on. i asked the pedi about it right when she turned two, and she said it was totally fine for her to poop a lot (i dont think i talked about the consistency then). but it's just gotten to be more poop and more often in the last few months. lately, i've been more concerned, as it is an insane amount of poop. should i call the pedi? watch her diet? get over it and just accept that my sweet girl is a big pooper?

Re: TMI: kids and poop?

  • I've noticed that L has been pooping a lot more frequently ever since we PT him.  I honestly think he's just not getting it all out at once like he used to when he went in his diaper.  Also perhaps all of the liquids she's drinking throughout the day are making it looser as the day goes on?

that's totally what my husband said, that she must not be getting it all out at once. thanks for the reply. i was worried i would have 200 views with no responses, and my daughter would curse me later in life for talking about her poop on the internet :)

  • We had the same issue with W then I noticed how much milk he was drinking. I cut the milk back to one 8oz a day and have noticed a big difference. Now he poops once or twice a day and it is just like a good poo is supposed to look like.

  • I wouldn't think twice about 3 times a day but 5 or more does sound a little peculiar.  But maybe it is the not getting it all out thing, although if its soft it seems like that shouldn't be a problem, right?  I don't really know what I'm talking about though :-)  The only thought I had was some sort of gut thing or food intolerance?  You could always try some good probiotics and see if anything changes.

    This was my thought, too.

  • That does sound like a lot of poop. I could see how if she was holding onto it then it would get looser as the day goes on. But, didn't you say she was going a lot in the morning? If that's the case then she might not be holding onto it and she might just have lots of poop.

I think I would be "concerned" about going that much in one day, everyday. I agree with the milk. Does she take a lot of dairy? I know that with people who have dairy sensitivities, it will make them have to poop a lot. Could you try a few weeks with a dairy alternative and see if that helps? The same goes with gluten but that's a lot harder to cut out.

Maybe try changing her diet and if that doesn't help then ask her pedi again? My kids have the opposite problem, chronic constipation. It's always something, huh!?

  • I have the opposite problem.  J can go 4 or 5 days without pooping.  And he eats a TON so I really have no idea how he keeps it in for so long.  The pedi was only concerned when it turned into chronic constipation, and we're working on that.  All of that to simply say that I think poo frequencies run a big spectrum and can still be okay.  As for the consistency, both of my boys do that.  The initial poos seem to be very, very hard and then are followed by more wet (almost diarrhetic) poos so that doesn't strike me as unusual.
