C-Section Mamas...

I just had my first. He refused to get in position for a vaginal birth so I ended up with a c-section. I'm anxiously preparing for my 6 week check up. DH and I would like to have our children close together. But I'm fearing the doctor will disapprove since I had a c-section.

Anyone have stories or advice here? I guess I'm wondering if it's common practice to have to wait, if it's super risky, or what...

Re: C-Section Mamas...

  • I got pregnant with DS3 when DS2 was 9 months and I have had 3 c/s. They will be almost 19 months apart. My Dr didn't say anything and right now, I'm still considered a low-risk pregnancy. I think it depends on how you are recovering with your current c/s though. GL!

  • I got the clearance to ttc at my 6 week checkup whenever I felt ready. The uterus is mostly done healing by then. My OB said there was a slightly increased risk of premature birth, but nothing so drastic I should be concerned. I had an easy 2nd pregnancy and went to 39.5 weeks.

If having a VBAC is important to you, some OBs want over 18 months between births. Some doctors are more lax-my dr would let me try a VBAC with births 12.5 months apart.

  • I got pg with DS2 when DS1 was 6 months old. This time DS2 was 12 1/2 months when we found out. My OB told me it's perfectly fine. The only reason you might want to wait is if you are wanting a VBAC. My doctor likes there to be 18 months between pg if a patient wants a VBAC but he said would be okay with 12 months. It didn't matter to me b/c I never intended or wanted to do a VBAC

  • 3 c's here, 18 months apart and 17 months apart.  I did have some issues though, but I'm not sure if it was the spacing or just simply something that would have happened regardless.  I was cleared each time so it didn't seem to be a concern initially.  I would like 1 more and this time I was told to wait at least a year before trying.

  • I had 3 c-sections - 19-1/2 months and 18 months apart. No issues except a slightly harder recovery after the 3rd c-section. I think that was more me not giving myself time to heal and jumping right back into normal activities involved with having 2 other kids.

  • Mine are 13 months apart. My first was 9 lbs. they recommended a repeat csection and I went for it. No concerns during pregnancy that I know of, just for labor and delivery. Good luck!

  • With my first I ended in an unplanned section and when they took him out (he was 10lbs, 2oz) they tore a major artery in my uterus.  I was told I should wait 18 months between births, especially if I want to try for a VBAC.  There will be 19 months between them, 18.5 if I go with the RCS.

Even if the dr disapproves, ultimately it is your body and your choice, you will just want to do what feels right and is in the best interest of your family.

  • My doctors even approved me for VBAC & I got pregnant at 8 months. If you plan to have a 2nd c-section I don't think it matters as much. If you want to VBAC then most doctors recommend you wait until a year. I would wait at least 6 months because that is when the risk of uterine rupture is the highest. My doctors just happened to be pretty liberal on the idea compared to average. I didn't VBAC. I attempted but had to have a 2nd c-section. Just keep in mind that if you have a RCS you won't be able to pick up your first child for 2 weeks so you'll probably need help. That was the hardest part for me. Today was the first day I could pick up my son and I am so happy because it was so sad not picking him up when he put his arms up.

  • My first two were born via c-sections 14 months apart, and my third c/s will be 18 months after the second. My dr is not concerned. She also would have let me attempt VBAC had I chosen to.
