Due in 9 days, decided I want to try aspects of AP! Help!

Hi!

I'm due in 9 days (with baby #1). I have to confess, I haven't even been a lurker on this board.

I have an Ergo and a playpen with a bassinet as well as a co-sleeper (made for in the bed), and I am going to breastfeed.

After very superficial research, I've decided that I want to try aspects of AP, namely baby-wearing and co-sleeping (not sharing the bed necessarily, but having her sleep right beside the bed in her bassinet instead of across the hall). I also plan on feeding on demand.

I feel a little overwhelmed about looking up resources for how to properly go about AP online, and I'm wondering if anyone can share good links or recommend a book on the topic? Any basic advice would be great as well. As I said, I am due in 9 days, so I don't feel like I have a lot of time to get the jist (sp) of it before I will be thrown into this!

Also, try not to stress about not having researched AP and just do what you think is right when the time comes and follow baby's lead.

I agree with this 100%.  I don't define my parenting, I just go with the flow and the flow with my family tends to be more AP style then "traditional parenting", (if that's the opposite of AP).

This exactly. I had barely heard of AP when DS was born, but we just learned by doing what felt right and naturally trying to meet DS' needs. It wasn't until after I had discovered my own parenting style that I realized it aligned with much of the AP parenting style.

I really don't think any sort of book is necessary. AP is about responding to your individual child's needs, and since every baby is different, there isn't just one way to do it that's universal.

I refer to dr. sears site occasionally (like for sleep questions and such) but otherwise I just do my own thing. I actually never realized how much my parenting fell in line with AP until my LO was older.

Yep this for me too.  I hadn't heard of AP at all.  I was just facing a lot of criticism from family about my choices and went online to make sure I wasn't crazy.  Turns out I'm not crazy, my style is just more AP and well my family is not.

Just do what you feel is right (AP or not).  Trust your mommy instincts and take it a step at a time.

I agree with previous posters. I just wandered over here and found that my style of parenting fits with attachement parenting. I believe that S knows what she needs and I just have to respond to her rapidly changing little self.

I still feed on demand, she's still in our room, and I'm simply following her lead.
